I slowly walked home, deep in thought. Today is the day. The day I am going to tell mom i'm quitting school. It's been ruining my life for 11 years. Mom ignores my... side like it's nothing! I can't let school run my life when I'm only around for half of it! She says school is my only chance at life, but I never get to do anything fun. Or useful. I could be devoting my precious time to finding others like me, or better, finding dad. I can't go to college anyway, so why am I making 'friends' and learning 'valuable' information when I'm gonna get an average job and live alone for the rest of my life? Mom doesn't understand. No one does. I've been thinking about quitting school for, well... as long as I can remember. I want to explore the world. I want to find others like me. Hell, maybe I'll make real friends. And maybe, just maybe I'll find answers my impossible questions. Why did dad leave? Was he a werewolf too? Why is mom determined to keep me in school? I stopped thinking and realized I was at my front door. I took a deep breath, closed my eyes, and let my body deflate, loosening every muscle and relaxing every thought. Momentarily. I opened my eyes and turned the front doorknob slowly. I summarized my speech and made mental notes. Remember, it's your life, you should be in control. School takes up free time. Want to travel. Find dad. Next thing I knew I was inside. I closed the door and, hearing this, mom shouted from the other side of the house, "Azure, is that you dear?" Her voice was getting louder, so she was coming to check on me. I walked into my small living room and threw my backpack onto a small, old couch that took up space so the room didn't look empty. Mom walked into the living room through another entrance and scanned me. She saw my sorry eyes before I even knew I was sad. Why do I have to tell her now? It will only hurt her!
"Do you want to tell me something, honey?" Mom said with a curious tone. I never really looked and made eye contact with her yet, I try to avoid doing so. But my emotions were getting strong. I looked up at her and reminded myself of the monster I am. Mom had a beautiful face. She had emerald green eyes that could tell stories on their own. She had beautiful long blonde hair that danced behind her shoulders. She had a small, cute nose and a permanent smile. But then something happened two years ago. Now her hair is cut short. Her smile is gone. And three vague pink lines were visible from her forehead above her right eye down across her left eye. Her left eye is still green, but is always closed. The lines ended on her cheek. Those lines were made by claws that slashed her. And now she can't see out of her left eye. She tells everyone it was a bear. But it was me. I did that. The other me. The werewolf me. She was tying me down while I transformed and... you can probably... guess... what happened... she forgives me, she says. But deep down, she sees me as a monster. Ever since then she's kept her distance.
"Honey, are you okay?"
"Huh- yea mom" I looked away, tearing up a little.
"Did you wanna talk about anything?" She motioned for me to sit down on the couch with a look of concern on her face. Yes! I do want to talk about something!
"No, I'm fine, mom."
"Are you sure Azure?" Tell her! Your quitting school!
"Actually, I wanted to say, I'm, um, well, you see..."
"Yes?"
Tell her! "I'm quitting school." I glanced over at her. She looked worried. I sat down on the couch and she sat next to me. I looked down at the floor while we talked. Mom put her hand on my lap and talked slowly.
"We've had this conversation many times, Azure. You're not giving up your only chance at life because you don't like school some days, it will get-"
"Better? Easier? Because it hasn't gotten any better, in fact, school's getting worse. It's not my grades, or the food, or the mean kids, hell even my lack of friends I can deal with, but I'm sick and tired of this. Every single day I go to a school I hate, come get locked in my house so I don't turn into a beast, do homework I don't understand, then go to bed to have nightmares. Every. Day. Even my weekends are torture, since most of them are on a full moon! School isn't my chance at life, it's keeping me from living!" Tears slowly rolled down my cheek, one after another, and I hid my head in my hands. Mom didn't need that. What have I done. Mom sniffled.
"I see. Are you... are you sure?"
"Yes!" I shouted through my hands.
Mom got off of the couch and sat on the floor in front of me.
"Azure, look at me."
I picked my head up out of my hands, sniffling. I looked at her. She was serious. Her other eye was open.
"Azure, I'm going to tell you about your father."
