It was my second month in and I already hated it.
It was the beginning of something I wish I had never gotten into. Grade twelve math class. Secondary school standard is only three years of math due to the credit requirements for Ontario high schools but I had to take it my fourth year because I had chosen to be an electrician and apparently it was required to be accepted into the Electrical Techniques program at the college of my choice. I had to sacrifice my first class of the day, my elective yoga class, just to take math again. Mathematics was my least favorite subject but on the upside, the teacher of the class was really nice and patient. I spent most of my mornings in math class either half asleep or texting Jason. That's typically what a lazy seventeen year old would do when math class was boring her. I couldn't give a rats ass about Pythagorean theorem and quadratic functions. This is what happens when you're forced into choosing your career in eleventh grade.
Other than that I was doing great. It was my senior year, I had a small but strong group of friends and I was head falling hard for a man that happened to reside in Ohio. We had gotten to know each other really well and we always played Call of Duty Black Ops II together all the time. Well most of the time, sometimes we'd find ourselves just talking to each other over our Xbox party chat and forget that we were even playing.
It had been a month since we had started talking and even though we had only been texting and calling each other on Skype, it felt like he was there with me in person. Every day, we would go home and Skype would become our lifeline. He brightened up my life like no other human being could.
Little did I know it but October 6th 2013 became one of the most important days of my life. Jason had asked me to be his girlfriend and of course, no matter what anyone thought, I was happy to be his. He went from being a close friend, to being my boyfriend. He was considerate, thoughtful and made me incredibly happy. I never wanted anything more than to be with him. He was so sweet and he worked so hard for everything.
As I still got to know him, my parents did as well. I had let my parents know when I first started talking to Jason and they would have a level field to work with. The most important thing I did for my sake and my parents sake was easing it onto them at the very beginning that I was dating a guy from a different country. My thinking was, if I let them get to know him as I got to know him, they would hopefully start to trust him and love him as I did. Luckily for me I had a set of great parents who were, very weirdly, understanding and went with it. I'm sure they had doubts at the start but they must have kept it to themselves. Maybe they too could see the juxtaposition between him and the previous guys I had dated. Maybe they could see just how happy I was and that was what mattered most to them.
If I hadn't let them know what I was up to and suddenly sprang it onto them that I was dating a guy from a different country that was three years older than me online, I'm sure that would have been a different story altogether.
