Chapter Fifteen
Innocent Grace.
Ellie's Pov:
I stepped harder on the gas pedal, speeding down the highway. "We're almost there, Sammy. Just hang on." I kept telling her.
She gripped my hand tighter, groaning in pain. "Keep looking at me, alright?" I gave a nervous smile. She attempted to smile back at me, failing and turning away, clenching her eyes shut.
I felt myself start to sweat from how anxious I was. I couldn't let Sam know I was just as worried as she was, probably more. It'd probably make the entire situation worse if I didn't keep calm. My main priority was keeping her relaxed as possible until we got there. I guess you could say I'm not doing a very good job so far, considering she was near passing out.
"Keep looking at me." I said again, getting her to turn her head towards me for the fourth time. "Ellie..." She moaned, tensing up even more. "Don't speak. Focus on your breathing." I told her, my voice shaky and concerned. She nodded, taking a few breaths before letting out a horrifying scream that nearly made me jump out of my skin.
My heartbeat was racing a million miles per second, Sam now screaming her head off as the pain grew. I could feel her muscles tightening, my foot stepping even harder.
At this point I was freaking out, at least on the inside I was. I couldn't swallow it, her screams were scaring me like hell but I knew she couldn't help it. "Are you okay?" I asked as calmly as I could. She glared at me, her breathing now rapid. "Do I fucking look-" I winced as she screamed again, turning away and hitting the side of the car door with her fist.
The drive was thirty minutes but I got there in about five, surprisingly without a ticket.
I put her arm around me, letting her gain her balance. "We're walking now, alright?" She nodded, grunting as we made our way through the huge parking lot. "Baby, you're doing great." I tried to assure her but I knew it wasn't really doing an effect. Her face was tired and pain filled, whimpering with every step.
"Excuse me-" I was basically shoved away from Sam, some doctor placing her in a wheelchair and rushing down the hall towards the Emergency Room. I guess to them, it was obvious to tell what was happening.
I stood there for a minute, unsure of what to do. I was trying to catch my breath. It wasn't that I was tired it was my nerves finally getting to me. "Do you need assistance?" I heard a feminine voice ask.
I turned around, smiling slightly as if to greet her. She waited patiently for me to get my breathing back properly. "My wife is in the Emergency room. Can I see her?" I asked.
She grabbed my shoulder. "I'll take you back there but I don't know if you're allowed to see the patient, especially since you're not in the best shape right now."
I hadn't even noticed I was shaking, my sweat was cold and I was just as red in the face. "Come with me." She ordered, walking down the long hallway, her shoes clicking against the overly shiny floor.
I slowly sat in one of many chairs against the wall. The door closed behind the nurse that brought me, the tv playing some show I wasn't interested in. "Fuck..." I whispered, resting my face in my hands. I didn't know what to think. I knew it was coming but I'd never be prepared for it.
I couldn't stop thinking about her, if she was ok. If they were ok. I had a weird knot in my stomach that kept jerking around. My hands felt frozen, my legs stiff. I was happy, scared, worried, confused, excited and nervous all at the same time.
I swallowed hard, sighing and resting my head against the wall. I let myself drift off, trying to rest. Why not? It was 4:00am and I would pass out eventually if I didn't.
