(in an au where you can hear your soulmates thoughts)

Bucky hadn't thought anything of the possiblity he could have a soulmate, in the army, it was required that people not have met their's yet. (due to too many being able to hear the last thoughts of their loved ones, and not being able to do anything about it)
And once he met Steve, he was perfectly fine without ever meeting his.

Most people had loud heads, hearing random thoughts all the time wasn't fun, but it made finding your soulmate ten times easier.
Bucky had never had a single idea or worry cross his mind that wasn't his, and he was fine with it.
But it made it all the more torturous when the long days dragged on, and it made him feel incomplete without the persistent buzz of information that other people claimed they always had.

Steve had a soulmate, a steady stream of random thoughts or equations seemed to flow into his head.

Even when Bucky was dropping through the air towards the ever-nearing snow drifts, not a single word answered the desperate screaming in his head.

Even when he was bleeding out against the ground, the only sounds to answer him were the yellings of a worker who spotted his corpse against the cold white ground.

There were lulls in his experimentations, where he would hope to anything and anyone to help him, to talk to him.

The answer he always got was silence.

When he finally resurfaced from the cryo-chamber, he finally heard things, incessant ramblings running through his head as he was trained back into practice by HYDRA.

He shook off the questions that ran through his and the other's head at his sudden thoughts of "what happens now?"

It's after a few months when he finally finds out who his soulmate is.

The enemy. Falcon. Sam Wilson.

He doesn't use the other's planning to win his way into success. He tells himself that it's cheating to do that, and that he should play a fair fight.

Fighting against someone that knows everything that's going through his mind is a different story, it's scary and calming at the same time. (the only truly scary thing is what Sam thinks of his mask, the thought of "god, why does this guy look like a damn raccoon?" will never escape his mind)

Then, he gets taken back to the HYDRA base, and everything changes when Sam is actually able to hear everything he pleads for during his "reprogramming"

The next time they meet, he looks at him in a different light, and draws his punches more.

The rest of the mission, and the missions after that, pass by in a blur of fighting and retreating. Bucky barely remembers anything besides quiet assurances that only he can hear.

When he finally, finally, gets back to himself, war never stops following him.
At least this time he's not fighting against Wilson. (getting stuck to a floor by a kid wasn't the best impression to leave though)

The fighting never seems to stop for him, almost getting killed by a guy in a spandex cat suit apparently wasn't the weirdest thing.

He got turned into dust, hit fast-forward on around five years, almost got turned into dust again, and barely had time to catch his breath during all of the fighting going on.

At the end of a funeral for a person he barely knew, Steve leaves him, his best friend, abandons him for a girl he only just knew about, and he doesn't cry.
He can't cry.
Crying would only make him feel bad for everything that's happened.

So instead he focuses on the hand on his shoulder, and the brown eyes allowing him comfort within all of his worries.
