When I shut the door behind me at my new apartment, I breathed a sigh of relief. I hadn't wanted to worry Denki, but I'd felt the cuts on my back reopen. I would need to change the bandages.
When I took off my hoodie, a piece of paper fluttered out of the pocket. I didn't remember putting anything in it.
We took care of your keeper. We'll be moving on the school tomorrow. Be ready. The symbol of peace will be no more.
I ripped up the paper and threw it in the trash. If they wanted my help, they could talk to me face-to-face, not have someone run into me and leave notes.
When I arrived back at school the next morning, I knew I looked horrible, but I didn't care. Between the pain from the burns and other injuries and the nerves about the attack, I hadn't gotten any sleep. I wasn't ready for school, let alone an attack.
"Kaiya!" Mina squealed. "I can call you that, right? How are you? I can't believe you're back at school already!"
"The doctors cleared me," I said.
"That's great!" This girl has too much energy. "Where did you get Kaminari's hoodie?"
"What?" I asked, looking down at the hoodie I had been wearing yesterday. "This isn't--"
"Oh, it totally is," Mina said. "He was wearing it a few days ago."
"I'm too tired to argue," I said, taking my seat.
Mina didn't let the issue drop for long. The moment Denki walked through the classroom door, Mina shouted at the top of her lungs, "Kaminari! Is that or is that not your hoodie that Kaiya is wearing?"
I knew without having to look in the mirror that my face was the same crimson shade as Denki's in that moment.
"I knew it!" Mina shouted gleefully.
"Quiet down," Aizawa, the homeroom teacher, said. "I know we're all excited to have Yamikawa back, but we still have work to do."
"Don't we always?" Denki muttered.
"We'll be taking a bus to USJ," Aizawa continued. "Get your hero costumes on."
Mine hadn't been severely damaged in the battle a few days ago, so I was able to wear it, unlike Midoriya, who had destroyed his. I noticed a few scorch marks on my costume, and it was obvious the jacket had been replaced, but I didn't mind.
I sat next to Denki on the bus ride to USJ. He was obviously worried about something, but I didn't pry. Instead, I fell asleep. I was too tired to worry about myself, let alone someone else.
I was too tired to worry about the villain attack.
"I don't think this is part of the rescue training..." Denki said, backing away from the center of the USJ. Villains had appeared and were making there way throughout the building.
All I could do was stand there, frozen in place. If I had warned the teachers, maybe the attack wouldn't have happened. And now my classmates—my friends—were going to die for my mistake.
"Kaiya, come on," Denki said, grabbing my arm, "we have to get out of here."
"We can't just leave Aizawa to fight them alone," I said.
"We'll only get in his way and I can't call for help. Something is jamming the signal."
"He's right," another hero, Thirteen, said. "Go find help."
As I turned to run, a void blocked our way. I put my mask on before Kurogiri recognized me and hid behind Denki, trying not to be seen by the villain.
