After about a two hour ride , we arrive at my house. It was dark and cold out and the streets were empty.
I walk up to the front of the house and knock on the door...no answer. I turn the knob and it's unlocked, so I walk straight in.
The house was dark and empty.
"Mom?" I call, no answer.
"Dad?" Still no one.
"Grant? Em'? Anyone? Please..."
"Right here." I hear someone say.
Em' pops up from behind the couch, the couch was on top of her leg.
"Em'!" I run to her and pull the couch off her leg so I could hug her. "I'm so happy to see you...where are the rest of the family."
"They went to grandma's while our house was under construction. See the roof?"
I look above me and see the roof was falling apart.
"Why are you here?"
"I stayed hoping you'd come back...I had faith in you."
Em' limps over to the counter and pours tea from a hot kettle into two cups.
"Here, it might taste bad, I've never made anything like this before."
"Thanks."
"Hey look, Avia. It's snowing."
I look out the window and saw the snow blanketing the grass. It was...beautiful.
Em' comes and hugs me...then groans.
I felt a warm liquid against my hoodie, I looked down and there was blood. Lots of blood. My knife was sticking straight out and went into Em's side.
She backs away and puts her hand on my shoulder and gives me the warmest smile .
More blood goes into the floor but Em' still manages to walk over and sit on the couch with me.
Tears roll down my face. "I'm so sorry , this is all my fault."
"No, it's not your fault. You didn't know ..."
Blood then again splashes on the floor.
"You're home now, Avia. Please don't leave again." , she says.
"I won't."
"Avia , you're not a murderer ...or even an evil being. You're a protector. All you ever did was try to protect yourself and your family."
"No, Em', I'm an ugly killer...and I'm out of my mind. Who knows , I'll go insane again and kill someone else. There are things you don't know..."
"Avia—"
"Em', I can't stay here..."
"I want to stay but I—"
"Avia, promise me, stay...for m-me."
"Okay... if it means that much to you...I'll stay."
"When you left, I knew you'd remember me...and please, always do." she grabs my hand as blood splashed onto the ground as Em' falls to the floor.
"Em'!" I say , holding her in my arms. "Em'...please...Em'...no!"
She takes her last breath in my arms and my tears fall on her body.
This can't be happening...
I pull a box of matches from the kitchen drawer and set the living room on fire . "If you go...I go." I pull my knife from my pocket and point it toward my neck.
Then I hear the door loudly slam open.
"Avia!" Cleaver shouts. "What happened?"
"She's dead...." I say with tear filled eyes...I could barely see anything around me. Cleaver takes the knife and throws it in the fire.
"Let's go, now!"
I walk over to Em' and carry her body out.
"I don't care anymore if I get taken to jail, we need to take my sister to a hospital. Please."
—
Once we arrive at the hospital I tread through the snow and as soon as I walked through the doors every eye was on me. But no one said a word.
"Please...take her..."
—
A doctor instructed me to sit in the waiting room while she contacted my parents. Next to me was a boy with long black hair, wearing a black hoodie and a pair of headphones.
I take off my hoodie and fold it up. There was a big ass blood splotch and it was drawing unwanted attention.
Suddenly I hear high heels clang against the floor. I see a tall, red-haired lady, with short curls and glasses walk up to the boy beside me.
"Griffin, honey, we've decided what we're going to do." She says taking off his headphones.
"Mom, I was listening to that!"
"Dr. Stryker says it would be best for you to go to a mental hospital and I'm giving permission to do so."
"But that's not fair at all!"
"I'm sorry, honey."
As soon as she walks away I turn him. "Hey, I'm Avia. I just heard everything and—"
"I'm sorry about that my mom doesn't know how to have private conversations."
"I heard she wants to put you away...in a mental hospital?"
"Yeah. Just because I hear voices and shit, so unfair."
"I'm leaving this town with my friends, wanna join?"
"I don't know , I just met you—"
"You can trust me..."
"Usually people who say 'you can trust me.' can't be trusted."
"I'll get us out. No one will find us."
"What's your plan?"
"Drive off to Idaho and find a place to stay and hide. Simple."
"But ain't that a long ass drive?"
"Eh."
"Okay, I'm in."
—
We sneak out of the hospital and into the car.
"Avia, who's the dude?" Cleaver asks not looking back from his seat.
"We'll explain later just drive."
"Where are we going now?"
"Idaho."
"Idaho?!"
"Don't ask now, there's no time."
"Okay, fine, let me just put on a gps."
Cleaver booked up the gps to the radio and drove off.
