Mae's POV

This might not have been the best decision, I was soon to find out from starting my journey. The evening that was falling upon the sky was a gentle, cool air, but the breeze was a bitch. The cold air was whipping at my face, leaving almost a burn. Okay that might be a little exaggerated, but it still hurt. I've been walking for a long while. The sun had gone down a little bit ago, so it was about 7pm. I wondered if they'd search for me. Hell do I care though? I won't let them find me again. I can't let them find me again. I had no sense as to where I was going, walking aimlessly next to a seemingly endless gravel road, hoping it would bring me somewhere. 5 days stuck with my kidnappers, 7 if you consider the two days I was knocked out, I needed to escape, to be able to live out the rest of my life. I wasn't going to die with the last sign of human contact recorded in me being some psycho. Besides... this man needed to pay for the third time at least. 3rd times the charm they say!

I saw a building, not too big, at the base of a hill I had just climbed. My eyes lit up. 'This is my shot,' I thought to myself, trying to contain my excitement, 'I can escape.' I ran down the hill towards the building, not minding the ache in my legs or the stiffness of my torso. Nothing to me mattered more than seeing someone, anyone, any kind of civilization will do. It was a gas station, still standing, with a car parked on the side of the building. I immediately went inside, desperate to find someone to talk to and a phone. There was a man behind the counter smiling towards me as soon as I entered.

"Hello! What can I help you with ma'am?" He greeted me politely. I haven't heard a word of respect in a hot minute.

"Hi..." I greeted him back, unsure how to express my situation. 'Help! I've been kidnapped for a week now!' or 'These mafia men are after me! Can you let me call the police?' wouldn't work in this scenario. I don't want to frighten him. He's the one shot I've got at never having to see Taehyung ever again. I hesitated before carrying on my sentence, "do you have a landline I could use?" A landline... really Mae? Is it the 1900s or something?!

"Uh, yeah I have one in the back... is there a problem?" he asked, a puzzled look on his face. I bit my lip, nervous as to how to answer him.

"N-no! I just don't have my phone on me and have to contact someone really quick!" I answered, smiling as I stepped forward, following him as he lead me to the phone.

"Make as many phone calls as you need." He said before going back to the counter up front. I took the phone and held it up to my face, dialing in the one number I had always known by heart.

It rang

And rang

And rang

Until finally the person on the other line answered

"Hello?" Oh how good it sounded to hear her voice.

"Elie! It's Mae!" I exclaimed, chuckling at the sound of her gasp.

"Is it really you?" She asked, disbelief clear in her voice.

"It is, it's me. Is mom there?" I asked, needing to make sure she was alright too. Elie hummed before shuffling could be heard as well as the light sound of feet on stairs. The phone was passed and I heard someone else clear their throat.

"Maenae? Baby is that you?" She asked.

"Yeah it is. I'm here mama." I answered, tears threatening to run down my face.

"Where are you? I'll have someone pick you up as soon as possible!" She yelled, excitement in her voice.

"No mama, I'm fine. I'm coming home this time, I promise." I protested, a tear falling down my cheek. We said our goodbyes and hung up. I needed to move if I didn't want to get caught. I went back out to the counter guy, still sat behind the counter on his phone. He looked up when I walked over to him.
