You rub your eyes and lean back in your chair. You've been scheduling meetings for hours, but now that you're finished the weight of it hanging over you is gone. You have nothing to do for the rest of the weekend.
With the relief comes sleepiness and you glance at the clock. You blink a few times to make sure what you're seeing is correct. It's 2:27am.
"Damn..." You mumble to yourself, "Alright, off to bed." You push the chair away from the table and extend your legs as you roll away. Your bare feet make no noise on the carpeted floor of your bedroom. You have only just finished getting into your PJs when Anti starts to shift in his sleep. This only catches your attention because Anti doesn't move at all in his sleep. In fact, he doesn't even seem to breathe. He does, you've checked, but the first time he stayed the night with you, you thought he had died.
So you are very concerned when he starts to mumble. You can't make anything out. He's shaking his head and his brows furrow. For a moment you're just standing there concerned and confused. Then, once you realize what's happening, you are at his side holding his head in your lap.
It gets worse before it get better. Soon enough he's yelling like he's in pain, and every faerful twitch of his body breaks your heart more. You hold your hands on either side of his head holding him relatively steady but not restraining him.
"Anti, if you can hear me I need you to listen. You are safe. You are having a nightmare and everything you are seeing is your mind playing tricks." You push his hair out of his eyes. "I am right here and I promise you that you are safe. You are lying in bed in your batman pajamas with me at your side."
You take one of his hands and give it a firm squeeze, hoping that he can feel it. In response, his breathing becomes more shaky, but less panicked. You intertwine your fingers with his and give another squeeze, pressing a kiss onto his forehead at the same time.
You keep holding his hands and talking to him, recounting the stories of how you met and when you had your first kiss. You tell him about when he saw flowers, real flowers, for the first time, and the time when you came home with a dog and a cat from the local animal shelter. You recall the time you took him fishing with Jack and you almost flipped the boat, and reminisce over visiting the candy store uptown for the first time with him.
Slowly but surely, his nightmare seems to ebb. His muscles relax and his breathing calms. You lie down next to him and hold him tightly, making sure he knows you're still there.
It's peaceful once again, and as you drift off to sleep, you give his hand one last loving squeeze. You might've imagined it, but you think you felt a gentle squeeze back.
