December - Winter 2014
Entering the holiday season, you may have noticed that Christmas songs are slowly creeping their way to the top of the charts. It seems as though every year shops and businesses are promoting their festive stock earlier and earlier, but a little extra merriment never hurt anybody.
So, this year it is not a surprise that the music industry is following suit. This year, the old Band Aid tradition of remixing 'Do They Know It's Christmas' (originally written by Bob Geldof) has made a come back under the new name ofBand Aid 30.
Band Aid 30 features some of the biggest selling British and Irish pop acts of current such as Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran, Ellie Goulding, Olly Murs, One Direction, Paloma Faith, Clean Bandit, Disclosure, Dan Smith (Bastille) and so many more. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Band Aid, it is a charity founded in 1984 by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise money and awareness for anti-poverty efforts in Ethiopia through the power of song.
2014's remixed single features a few 're-tweaked' lyrics to reflect the current Ebola virus crisis in West Africa with all proceeds going towards battling this unfortunate epidemic. A month from Christmas and the single has topped the charts, sitting comfortably at number one here in the UK. Let's hope that we can keep it there and raise as much money for the cause as possible.
