All Hallows' Eve is the most dangerous day of the year; it's the beginning of the dark cycle—and the veil thins. Pretty much every type of shadow species is out there to claim your soul. So to be out at witching hour when their magical is at its peak is asking to be killed, kidnapped, or sacrificed. Which means that logically I am, at quarter to three on All Hallows' Eve, at the club dancing.
My heart is pulsing to the beat of the music, strobe lights make the world play in slow motion. The club is full of demons, warlocks, vampires, selkies—really every species except for humans. I'm dancing in time with the beat when a girl in a red skin-tight dress makes her way through the mob of dancing people towards me.
"Wanna dance?" She says with a grin.
"Sure" I smile. I can see her aura spin around her like strands of rubies (odd considering that usually demons don't have auras.) She must have some demonic blood running through her veins, considering her long wavy violet hair parted by two spiral horns that twist around her head, and eyes that shine like gold. God, she's pretty.
"Does this dancing lady have a name?" I ask.
"Tori," she grins.
"I'm Laine" I reply. We dance together, whirling through the crowd for what seems like forever, bopping to the syncopated beat. She pulls me close and then she kisses me and I kiss back, she drags me into a room concealed by a curtain without breaking us apart. I'm pulled onto a leather couch, she slips her hands through my hair and pulls herself forward, I snake my arm around her waist. All I can think about is how amazing it feels, and—
Suddenly the clock strikes witching hour startling me, breaking us apart.
"Sorry," she smiles, "there's somewhere I need to be."
"Oh...Okay." I get up and turn away, wishing I could just disappear. But as I start towards the door she grabs my wrist and pulls me close and kisses me one last time.
"For luck," she whispers.
I leave the club without looking back and turn down a street looking for somewhere else to waste my money and disappear. I don't even know where I'm going anymore and I just keep walking around aimlessly.
I pass a bunch of humanoid shadows and try to avert my gaze but they start following me. I speed up, trying to be near anyone but them—to just stop seeing them if only for a minute. Then suddenly something with an aura of death and emptiness pulls me back into the shadows, clamping a hand over my mouth.
I see all of the phantoms melt away, scared by whatever grabbed me.
A sharp pain pierces my neck and I catch a small glimpse of sharp angular features before I collapse with a thud. My thoughts become sluggish and thick like syrup, and then my eyelids fall shut and become too heavy to lift back up. I can feel the void getting closer—there's hundreds of hands reaching, grasping to catch me. Just as one of the hands grabs me and I pull myself towards it a swirl of light lifts me up and, cradling me, it pulls me away from the void and towards the living and the very place I'd been trying to avoid. This time I fade into sleep instead.
Hi the author here!
I have posted this story before but I wanted to try something new and there was a lot of changes I wanted to make to the plot line (plus a bit of foreshadowing) that I just forgot to add before.
Have a great day /night /morning!
