I don't know what I'm thinking. This girl just makes me feel alive. Her eyes—they're an emerald green and her freckles look like someone painted a million beautiful stars across her nose. Her perfect features are framed by long ginger hair that flows freely around her face. She looks stereotypically Irish, right down to the dark green dress that brings out the darker shades of green in her eyes.
She makes me forget my responsibilities and what I was supposed to be doing—summoning my aunt back from the nine hells with my warlock boyfriend. At least, that was the plan, until he dumped me about six hours ago. So now I'm here, at my cousin's night club drinking free drinks and dancing with hot people.
I hate being a demon—at least part—and I hate that I'm never going to fall in love because it's impossible, and I hate that no matter what I'm going to marry some stuck-up demon with a bloodline I can't even pronounce.
The clock chime scares the hell out of me and so I pull away from her. I apologize because im such a dick for pulling away like that, so I make up some stupid excuse for being rude. I watch her slip out the front door (I probably just took a wrench to her self confidence) and slip upstairs to sit with my cousin. We talk about how Aym's such a dick and how mom and dad should have never introduced us. She brings over a box of tissues but I'm not sad-crying—let's be honest, he was a total jackass—it's more drunk tears. She's saying something about how she's going to ban him from the club when my phone rings. I quickly spell off the drinks that I should have gotten out of my system ages ago, though sometimes it's nice to let yourself drift away into impulse and stupidity. I press answer and put the speaker to my ear.
"Tori!! You have ten minutes to get you lazy demonic ass in the house then I'm changing the wards to burn your hand off!!!" My roommate's screeching voice yells through the phone.
"Calm down, Ash! I'll be there in five!" So I hang up, hug Camron goodbye, and leave the club through the back door. It takes me a second to remember the flying rune and it stings my skin as I trace it with my finger, but it works and I start to float a tiny bit.
I push off the ground then off the building and shoot off in the direction of the apartment bouncing off buildings occasionally to change roads. I can feel the wind in my hair as I glide through the air. After what seems like forever , I arrive at my apartment building. I land at the side entrance in an alley rifling through my clutch and looking for my keys. Suddenly I hear a loud bang from down the alley. My eyes glow slightly, opening my reservoir of magik and shining light on the path of garbage cans. I look cautiously down the alleyway I peek around a dumpster to see a dark figure hunched over the neck of a limp form on the ground.
"HEY! SHIT WAFFLE! OVER HERE!!!," I shout, pushing my voice as loud as possible. He looks up at me and releases the girl and dashes toward me. I widen my stance, push down the ball of doubt that's burning in my chest and summon a lasso of burning light in my hands. As he approaches I let the loop fly. It misses his foot and instead he grabs it and pulls toward me grinning a horrible smile. With a flick of my wrist I send a shockwave down towards him and his creepy grin, he flies up in the air and lets go of my lasso, flailing for something to save him from falling. The wicked grin quickly melting into shrieks of terror, he lands messily—leaving his stance open to attack. I whip the loop around his foot and with a flick of my wrist I send another shockwave down the rope and it jerks him into the air higher than before. I whack him against the wall and the lasso throws him down on the ground like a ragdoll. The vampire sluggishly moves toward me as I quickly spin my lasso into a portal and push it towards him.
I let go of my connection to my power and it dissolves as I run towards the girl he dropped. The dick didn't seal the bite on her neck so there's blood everywhere. As I utter a healing spell under my breath the gash on her neck knits back together. I brush her ginger hair away from her arms so I can pick her up without tugging on her hair and then I recognize her; it's Laine.
Her mascara is smudged all over her cheeks, and she looks unnervingly relaxed, completely unaware of the chaos around her. I scoop her up in my arms and, I carry her back to where I dropped my bag, I imagine my magic curling around them and lifting it up and unlocking the door to the building, the bag slowly follow us. At the door the keys awkwardly sling into the keyhole and unlock it.
I clumsily make my way to the elevator, almost tripping over the slight lip on the floor, stumbling into the elevator and pushing the sixth floor button with my elbow. The walk down the hallway is just as treacherous—WHY THE HELL DID I WEAR HEELS!? I mentally scream to myself. I open the door with my keys again—more sluggishly this time—and kick the door open with a thwack!
"So you finally decided to come home—," Ash starts as I flick my heels off, but she quickly sees me carrying Laines limp form and stops her smart-ass comment before it can finish leaving her lips "Holy shit!! what did you do?!? Did you kill her!?" Her normally stone-cold bitch face is morphing into a worried frown, her thick brown eyebrows knit together as her eyes flash a vibrant yellow in surprise, her cat ears poking straight up through her hair.
"Well you see, there was this girl at the club, and... long story short she left the club before me... and then I saw her like two minutes ago getting attacked by a vampire...and yeah." She looks at me with a weird look, then gets off of the couch and leaves silently.
I hear the loud thwump! of someone flopping onto a bed and then she yells back at me, "I'M GOING TO BED HAVE FUN WITH YOUR UNCONSCIOUS HUMAN!"
I less-than-gracefully drop her down on the couch and stuff some pillows under her head. I clean most of the blood off of her neck with a damp cloth and then spell her dress into PJs—because there's no way I'm undressing an unconscious body. I pile a stack of blankets on top of her. I'm in my bed, just beginning to feel the soft lull of sleep when I hear a loud CRASH-BANG followed by someone groaning in pain from the living room.
Stumbling out of my room, I shield my eyes from the blinding hallway light. In the living room Laine is on the ground and pushing herself up off of a knocked over coffee table. There are magazines scattered everywhere and the lamp's lightbulb is shattered all over the floor. She glances up at me and recognition slowly dawns across her face, and she grimaces slightly cradling her left hand gently.
"Honestly didn't think I'd see you ever again," she says with a grimace.
