Darryl is paranoid. He doesn't know when his paranoia started. He hasn't always been like this, he knows that. He thinks everything will go wrong, snd he has a voice in his head telling him the worst scenario will happen. He had no friends, but he didn't care. All the 17 year old cared about, was the worst scenario.

Zak has been here for years. He didn't know how many, heck, he didn't even know how old he was, but he knew it has been years. He had a few friends, but that didn't matter. He spent all his time thinking. He spent all his time alone.
