Flashback -1993

A 17 year old Jim Moriarty walked beside his two best friends, Sabrina Reese and Tim Johnson. These people were the closest thing to family that Jim had. And though Jim would never admit it, these people meant the world to him. Together, they owned a small business that was rather unusual. They would pull off heists and commit other crimes, for people who didn't want to get their hands dirty. The three of them were family, not by blood, but by bond. They grew up together. Although their bond was strong, only one of them lives today.

The day that their lives unexpectedly ended, was like any other. The three friends were walking to their favorite coffee shop just down the road. To the average observer they would appear to be a normal group of teenagers, but the truth was far from that. When they arrived, they ordered their drinks and enjoyed each other's company. The waiter brought the beverages to their table. He picked up a coffee by its lid and it spilled all over Jim's shirt. Jim quickly got on his feet and ran to the restroom. He grabbed a towel and tried to clean his shirt. A tall man in a long over coat and a black fedora walked up behind him.

He spoke, "Jim, Jim Moriarty?" Jim turned around. "Yes?" The man took another step towards Jim. "I need to talk to you. I am from the Government, and I would like to make a deal with you. I know what you and your friends do for a living, we can take you down at any moment." Jim grit his teeth and said, "What do you want?" "I want to give you a chance to save yourself. We want you to turn your friends in without a fight. If you do this for us, we will grant you immunity from any and all crimes that you are found guilty of." The man handed him a piece of paper and walked out of the door. Jim looked at the piece of paper, then he walked out the door to re-join his friends.

That night in their flat, after everyone was asleep, Jim walked out of his room with his gun. He walked into the living room where his his friends had fallen asleep in each other's arms on the sofa. He whispered, "I can't turn you in, I wouldn't be able to live with myself. If we run, all three of us together will be caught. If we stay, we will get caught. If I free you now, and continue what we started alone, you will never have to feel the pain. You will never have to feel betrayed, and you can be free from this miserable planet. And I will stay here to pay for my crimes against you." He pointed the gun at Sabrina and pulled the trigger, then he moved the gun over so it was pointing at Tim. A single tear fell on his cheek before he ended his friend's life. Then it was over, his friends were gone forever and he would be left alone on this earth to pay for it. And that, was the last time that Jim Moriarty cried.
