Goodbyes

11 1 3

The house I used to visit all the time

 Still sits where it used to be,

 Where we used to play games and flip dimes,

 Now surrounded by bushes of thyme.

The house that held all memories,

 Both of good and of bad;

 From all those vivacious parties,

 To the repetitive parent-told children's stories.

Yet like waves it all came and went,

 And 'is' no longer stood,

 The time we spent together, what wonders it meant,

 Left in my young heart, a big gaping dent.

As time caught on, reminiscence became harder,

 The mention of your name no longer brought me to tears;

 The distance between you and me only grew larger,

 But without you, my world is undeniably darker.

Goodbyes have always been the hardest,

 Once you say 'farewell' there's no turning back;

 The image of you is now like falling stardust,

 And the goodbyes we've said are beginning to rust.

A little bit of background information regarding the poem:

This poem was written when I was around 14. I had originally intended this poem to be a tribute to my dear friend who had passed away due to cancer at the age of six - so that explains the "repetitive parent-told children's stories"; but as time went by, I realized how these words could apply to any situation where goodbyes were involved. When I look back on my old poems, I often find the language rather cringy - I was still in the process of getting used to poetic language (even though I still have a long long way to go), and quite a number of the phrases I've used above do sound rather childish. But if I were to pretend to be a literature master, maybe I could say the childlike-diction is actually a reinforcement of the innocence of the poem, and further draw readers' attention to the harsh reality of departure, due to how it is contrasted with the sweetness and purity of childhood? XDDD And regarding the specific objects I've used like 'dimes' and 'thyme', as much as I could forcefully twist it to make it seem like they were specially picked for symbolism, let's just face the reality that little me had merely chosen them for the sake of rhyming, and did minimal research on the art of symbolism. XD Either way, this poem is only a mere fraction of the documentation of my growth, and like they say - 'the best is yet to come'. (eek positivity againnn) XD

Thank you very much for reading my work. It really does mean a lot to me. Don't forget to leave a like and comment for suggestions! Thank you once again ❤︎
