Chapter 2 - Platform

My next couple of days at school went smoothly.

Peter would meet me on the subway every morning (because, according to him, I'm not a Queens "native" and it would be dangerous to leave me on the Queens Boulevard Line alone). Don't get me wrong, I can certainly handle myself in a city, but it's nice to have someone here to make me feel safe. Peter may not be a typical jock with big muscles to fight off bad guys, but something about him tells me I can trust him. If anything I'm sure he could annoy the bad guys with his nerdy jokes.

"Please say that's for me!" I say, not breaking eye contact with the gorgeous chocolate muffin he's holding as I run happily towards him. He smiles warmly and looks at his watch.

"Well... it was going to be for you. But since you're five minutes late I think I'll have to eat it." I narrow my eyes.

"What?" He says innocently. "It's compensation!"

He takes a bite and I snatch it from him.

"Fine, but you have to share."

My eyes widened as I took a bite. Holy shit, this was good. I moan dramatically, making Peter burst out laughing.

"Ohhh my god, Peter." He shoves me playfully and tells me to shut up.

I hear the train coming, and lock eyes with Peter. "Actually try this time, 'kay?" He rolls his eyes and squares his shoulders towards the passing train.

"3"

The train slows down.

"2"

It's almost stopped.

"1"

Wait for it...

"Go!" Peter yells. I sprint full speed towards the opening doors and shoulder past the people trying to get out. Of course they give me dirty looks, but whatever. Adrenaline is pumping and through my veins and nothing else matters.

I make my way through and turn around to look for Peter. That asshole!  He didn't even try. I shake my head as he leisurely walks through the crowd, apologizing to the people I pissed off.

"Live a little, Parker! We're teenagers. We basically get free passes to be inconsiderate brats in public places." I scold him as he grabs on to the handrail next to me.

He shrugs. "With great power comes great responsibility."

"Okay, Aristotle. Way to ruin my fun with your philosophical wisdom."

"Actually, my uncle used to say that... not Aristotle."

I give him a look that says that's so not the point  as the train starts moving.

Fifteen minutes later, we make it to school barely on time. I gave Peter a quick wave goodbye and jogged to my locker. I grab my copy of Romeo and Juliet for Advanced Literature as swiftly as possible and head to Room 319.

When I get there I start to worry if I took a wrong turn. I may still be new to this school, but I was pretty sure I knew my way through the halls. A girl is casually sitting in front of the door reading an entirely different Shakesphere novel from the assigned reading. I recognize her from the class, but why is she out here?

"Um... excuse me?" She doesn't look up, but her eyebrows raise in acknoledgement.

"Was class cancelled today? I could have sworn it started at-"

"Nah. I just refuse to support the mindless conditioning of adolescents with misconceptions on cautionary tales. Also, I'm pretty sure Mr. Magowski is a misogynist." She says in a matter-of-fact tone. I'm pretty sure my jaw dropped visibly, because she laughed when she looked at me.

"I'm just messing with you. Class is about to start." I let out a breath of relief and thank her. "I'm MJ by the way." She reaches her hand out, and I introduce myself too.

Look at me, already having three friends! My mom would be so proud.

~~

I had to miss AP Chem for a meeting with the college counselor, but Peter promised he would fill me in later. Punctual as ever, I get a text right after last block ends.

< Hey Y/N! It's Peter. I swear I'm not a creep, MJ gave me your number so I can catch you up on chem haha.

                                                                                 Lmao dork. What'd I miss? >

< Not much, but the STEM festival is next month.

                                                                                             Oooh, how exciting! >

< I hope that wasn't sarcastic.

< Anyways, wanna be partners?

< You totally don't have to say yes I just thought I'd offer because I know that you're really smart and I think we'd make a good team.

Peter's rambling is so adorable. I write a note on my phone to remind me to tease him about it later.

< ...I'll shut up now. Sorry.

Peter, I'd love to be partners with you! >

But you might be overestimating how smart I am... >

< Oh okay cool!

< And I'm a great judge of intelligence, so don't even try that ;)

A few minutes go by and I realize he's too awkward to keep the conversation going, so I decide to be the brave one.

Can I come over after school on Friday? >

*Typing*

The bubble disappears.

*Typing*

It disappears again?

*Typing*

< Yeah that would be good.

< Well not good but like okay?

< Not that I don't think coming over after school on Friday is good its just like... idk I'm doing it again.

< Anyways, yes. Friday works.

See you then Parker. :) >
