1939.
Gustav walked slowly through the streets of Munich, light glaring off his golden hair, the exhaustion from the long day finally sinking in.
He could still smell the metal on his oil tinged hands as he approached the small building he called home; he braced himself for the rant Helga would most likely start upon his entry in to the house, at least he could rely on Hans. He knew his trusty dachshund would be excitably waiting for his return. Gustav had always enjoyed his evening walks with Hans, and he knew despite their lack of money and dog food that Hans would always love him.
As predicted, the moment he opened the door his wife began to scream, shouting in rapid German about the latest cuts. Gustav rushed to shush Helga knowing that if their son, Otto, were to over hear their complaints about the lack of toilet roll they would be doomed. Otto had once been such a sweet boy, Gustav could still remember the days when he had joined himself and Hans on their evening walks, zooming round with a small plane in hand. That was before Hitler. That was before the schools began to change. That was before Ingrid had introduced them to Ella....
He could still remember the anger in Otto's eyes, the hatred when he discovered them kissing in the bedroom. It brought a tear to his eye as he remembered how Otto had brutally thrown his daughter down the stairs. His son was no more, the Nazis had taken him and left a weapon in his place.
