1945.
Gustav lay on his sofa, Hans by his side. It was 4 months before the end of the war. He was in a state of malnutrition, he could barely move. It was just him, Ingrid and Hans that night. Helga was out with her fellow feminist friends, Klaus was at his new house 3 streets away with his new fiancé and as for Otto, he was deployed somewhere in France.
It was that night when tragedy struck. When Helga returned the next morning she expected to find her family. Instead she found ruins, billows of smoke clouded around her as she tentatively touched her stomach, almost as if to calm a baby. She collapsed in to the shrapnel, loud sobs leaving her mouth. She had lost her family.
Gustav and Ingrid (along with the loveable Hans) were among the 400,000 Germans killed. There house one of the 3.6 million destroyed, but Gustav got what he always wanted a life with out Hans and what he hoped to be a safer world for his newly pregnant wife to bring up a girl who would never know her father.
