1944.
Klaus still had nightmares. About Otto. About Ella. It made him almost glad that the Führer had cut out education. School had always been tough for him, especially with all the homophobes. It had always made him scared to question his sexuality. That's how the 17 year old ended up with Greta. 6 months ago when they first started dating, Gustav had laughed saying he wished Greta was a dog and that she belonged in a fairytale. Greta was beautiful, she was caring but that didn't stop men from catching his eye. If his best friend, Paul, noticed the heated glances thrown at him by Klaus, he never said. It was a web of confusion. Klaus could honestly say he loved them both.
Gustav and Hans were cuddled up on the sofa when Helga returned from work. The bags under his eyes and the dogs limp coat were enough to reveal that they were starving. Gustav had been right to doubt Hitler all along. He knew that if the factory's were not desperate for workers, he would have been dismissed from his job. He didn't know how much longer he could live like this. He wanted to die.
