Hayley
I sat dumbly in the bundle of blankets and pillows on the wide roof, waiting impatiently for Jake to notice just how bored I was. But he stared at the stars like they were his children that had finally grown up and made him proud. That didn't stop me from throwing a fit about being here for the billionth time, though.
"Come on Jake, can we please go back to the base? I'm so sick of coming here every single night." I knew I was being a baby, but we have come to the same spot for the past seven years, and we never go anywhere I want to go.
He didn't answer me though, instead, he pulled me in to kiss him. I turned my head and said, "Jake, I'm being serious." He jokingly rolled his eyes and I smiled to show him that I wasn't really angry. As we were about to actually kiss, both of our phones pinged the regular alert meaning that the base needed us. As I began to reach for my phone, Jake grabbed it out of my hand and tossed it over the edge of the 500-feet skyscraper. I gave him a, "What the heck?" look, and he just smiled and shrugged. That fueled me to stand up and start to leave but Jake said, "Hayley come on." His tone was urgent, but I pretended I didn't see. jake stood up and followed me out of the building, down the hall, and into the elevator.
"Oh don't give me that face." He said in response to my smile. I knew just as well as he did that I would win that battle.
Once we got to the base, everyone was frantically working away at their stations.
"Jake, Hayley get to your posts. Parker has a team in Central City with a left over meta from all those years ago."
Di, Wonder Woman's daughter and one of the three leaders of Young Justice, told us in a serious tone.
"I guess the meta's power is staying awake all night, because I can't do it."
Jake whispered to me, making me snort. We walked to our posts, which were sadly across the room from each other and I put in my ear com.
"I have your eyes Kent, try to ice him."
Parker is another one of the team's leaders along with being Superman's son. All of the us who stay here have to help the teams who go on missions. We aren't the offspring of any heroes but instead the heroes saved us. We were orphans that the Justice League found as newborns and brought here, to make the world a better place.
"Took you long enough Hayley. Do you really think we havent iced him yet?" Parker said in a joking voice, despite the fact that he was rapidly fighting a fiery exploding metahuman.
"Well ice him more!" I yelled as I heard the loud booming voice of the meta grow closer to Parker.
Seconds after I said it, the communication cut out, and I slammed my ear com on my desk area.
"Communication's gone." I told Di, who was standing over someone's post with a screen of what was happening with Parker.
"Kitty, try to reboot it." Di told my best friend, Kitty, who was working on repairs on someone elses station.
"I'm trying." Kitty responded, with an annoyed tone telling me Di had been rushing her earlier, as usual. Di and Kitty will bud heads now and again because Kitty is a meticulous worker and Di demands urgency.
Kitty didnt take very long to get communication back on, but it felt like forever for everyone in the room. Parker and his team couldve died in the time that the com had been down and we wouldnt know. So everyone was watching as I tried to get Parker back.
"Kent, Kent are you there? Parker-"
" I'm here Hayley. We're on our way back."
At that everyone in the room began clapping and whooping that our team had survived yet another mission. Especially a mission in Central City, those can get messy.
