Kitty
It was almost 2:00 am. We had already had a late-night mission and no one was going to reattempt sleep. Everyone was either off at a party or chilling in their quarters, but there I was in the infirmary checking on the people who were off on the mission earlier. It was draw blood, check their stats, ask them the regular, "Are you dizzy? Are you hurting anywhere?" questions, and repeat to the next hero. I don't have any medical degrees, but I've been volunteering in the infirmary since I was 11. I have always been quite interested in medical stuff because I know someday it might come in handy and I enjoy the company of our chief medic, Doctor Caitlin Snow. She worked with The Flash when she was younger and has about a billion stories about her medical adventures.
I was sitting in the infirmary waiting for a certain someone who has a deathly fear of needles and seems to always show up late to his checkups. As I was giving up hope for Parker to ever show up, he walked in and shot me a nervous smile.
"Oh my gosh Parker, this is record time! Only an hour and a half late! Much better than last week's four days late!" I said in my most sarcastic tone. Parker has a reputation for being a fearless jock that everybody loves, so when he's actually scared he tries desperately hard not to show it, but always fails miserably.
"Just go fast please." He said, annoyed that I make fun of his fear every time he comes in.
I smiled and opened my drawer for the alcohol wipes and band-aids. As I began cleaning his arm, he kept slowly backing away. I pulled his arm closer and stuck him with the needle, covering it up with dark red tape as he makes me do each time. After about three minutes I bottled the blood and smiled, grabbing a dum-dum and Superman sticker from the small jar I keep just for him.
"You're done, you were very brave," I say in a comforting voice that I usually use on the smaller kids that come in. Parker got up to leave when I said it, and I laughed, "You have done this only a hundred times. You know we're not completely done."
"Hurry up, would you?"
"I will go as long as it takes me," I said taking his blood pressure and noting everything on my computer.
I finished his appointment, slower than usual because I don't like to be rushed. When I was done, Parker said his goodbye as quickly as possible and was gone much faster than when he came. Usually, Parker is the most respectable and gentlemanly person here, but anything that has to do with doctors, dentists, or anything medical in general turns a switch in his brain, making him silent and rude.
I was cleaning off the counters and making sure I filed everything when Doctor Snow walked in.
"How'd it go?" She asked with her easy smile.
"Well our star patient was earlier than usual, so I'd say that's a plus," I said, smiling right back at her.
"Did the mission go alright?" She began disinfecting the equipment."I'd say so. Nothing really went wrong. I just wish they wouldn't call us in for useless missions at two in the morning."
"Yeah, that part of it sucks. But it will get better once you're more of a senior officer." She said so casually. Like she had no clue how impossible it is for us orphans to get any higher than we are right now. The heroes pretty much run the place. But, I stayed true to my positive self and smiled.
"Yeah, maybe," I said in a hopeful tone. I would never want to disappoint Dr. Snow.
I packed up my medical bag and cleaned up my area. I said my goodbyes to Dr. Snow and went off to my room for a night of nothingness.
Hayley
I struggled to ring Di's doorbell, due to holding a tray of brownies, a gallon of Dutch chocolate ice cream (Di's favorite), and a gift bag with her birthday present."Hi! Oh my Gosh." Di said opening the door and realizing my struggle. She began trying to help me before I dropped everything. Her dark hair was down and wavy, as it's usually pulled into a bun for work. She was wearing a plain maroon t-shirt over a pair of plaid pajama pants. Even in something that would make anyone ugly, Di looked like a princess.
"You brought too much Hayley!" Di said, laughing and setting it all down on her kitchen counter. We all have identical rooms that have a very small kitchen because we are technically supposed to eat in the dining hall. Each room has a futon and tv in a small living room. Then, there is the bedroom with a huge window and a bathroom. All of the rooms are originally very bland, where we can add our own things. Di's room is always very neat and tidy decorated with deep reds and greys. It reflects her personality pretty well.
We were sitting on her couch eating junk food while Di was opening her presents.
"Sorry, it was so late. We have had so many missions that this has gotten interrupted so many times." I said, mainly making sure she liked the picture I gave her of the two of us a few years ago sitting on the swings at Gotham Central Park. I had made the frame myself out of little tiles I bought at a flea market with Kitty.
"It's not that late, and I love the picture." She said smiling and stuffing her face with ice cream straight from the carton. I laughed when she got it all over her shirt and face. She got up to go change and knowing her it would take forever, so I went to the kitchen to get a glass of water.
I walked in and saw a box sitting on the counter. On the top was a big sticker that said classified, so naturally, I opened the box. It was just full of paperwork, and I was about to walk away until I saw my name on a paper that said, "The Watching Agreement." I picked it up and began reading: "The Justice League has come to an agreement with Amanda Waller that the children of our city's most hated villains will be raised as orphans with the newest team, Young Justice. The children include Jake (unknown last name), Katherine (unknown last name), Hayley (unknown last name)..."
I couldn't read anymore. Shock hit me like a bullet to the chest. The list names more the supposed "orphans" that live here. I wanted to cry, but I realized there's no time for tears. There's no time for anything anymore. My life felt so purposeless, I have lived a lie. There was only one thing to do, I grabbed the paper and ran out of the room and down the hall to the elevator as fast as I possibly could. I pushed the familiar number nine and tried to stop thinking. If I got too lost in my thoughts, I would have a panic attack and there definitely wasn't time to deal with that version of me.
The elevator doors slid open and I ran down the hallway to Jake's room. I didn't bother ringing the doorbell when I got there and opened the door to Jake sitting on his couch staring at his tv. It sounds like a normal thing to do, but the tv was turned off. When I closed the door, he looked up at me and smiled. "Weren't you supposed to be hanging out with Di tonight."
I ignored him and said, "Read this, " while shoving The Watching Agreement in his face. He grabbed it and began reading it with a completely straight face until he dropped it. It seemed to take a full ten minutes to hit the floor, but once it did he looked me in the eye and said, "We need to leave."
My face was only filled with worry as I said, "Yeah." He looked past my worry and into my pain when he looked at me. Into my feeling of betrayal, my sorrow. It reminded me why I love him so much.
