Sal POV

"This will be our new beginning. We can finally leave what happened in New Jersey behind us now,..." Dad's voice startled me out of dark thoughts. "Why don't you go explore the building and make some friends while I finish unpacking?"

"Alright, I guess," I mumble.

Dad walks into his room and shuts the door behind him. I start out into the apartments. I spot the cop who was here when Dad and I arrived. I decide to see what is up. I walk up to him.

"Hello," I say.

The cop doesn't say anything.

"Who are you?" I ask.

"I'm your fairy fucking godmother... What does it look like?" The cop grumbles. "I'm an officer of the law, so you should show me some respect."

Honestly, you don't deserve respect, asshole. I say silently.

"Why are you standing here?" I continue.

"I'm protecting nosey little freaks from seeing what they ought not to see," the cop snaps. "Now scram. I don't get paid to babysit."

"What happened in that room?" I demand.

"Police business, kid. Why don't you run along to your parents?"

"I wish I could," I mumble.

"What was that, wise ass?"

"Nothing," I respond.

"That's what I thought," the cop growls. Under his breath he adds: "Stupid weirdo kid,..."

With that, I walk off. I decide to go to the room just behind me and Dad. I knock, but no one answers. Disheartened, I go into the elevator and head up to the fifth floor. I immediately notice the warning signs.

"'This floor is currently being renovated. For your safety, please make your way to the nearest exit.'" I read to myself.

I ignore the signs and walk off. I try 501 through 503, but they were all locked. 504, on the other hand, was not.

"Hello?" I call out. That's when I noticed the dirty man sitting on the floor. "Sorry, I didn't think anyone lived up here."

The man just sits there, staring at me eerily. It was creeping me out. Maybe he was hurt.

"Hello? Sir? Are you ok?" I ask.

"You shouldn't have come here," the man croaks.

"I'm sorry," I apologize. "I was just trying to get to know the new neighbors, and-"

"A dark place," the man cuts me off. "This building. Horrible things happen."

"Are you sure you're ok?" I persist.

That's when I hear a knocking noise. I whip my head to look at the door so fast that my prosthetic nearly flies off. When I look back, the man was gone.

"What the,...?" I mumble.

I walk deeper into the room to look around, but I still don't see him. Creeped out, I leave. I head down to the third floor. On one side of the elevator was a "caution, wet floor" sign. I walk over to the other side. A woman with a mop was here. I cautiously walk over to her.
