also, this chapter contains homophobic slurs, violence and bullying
Sal POV
I pull on one of my sweaters. After a bit of thought, I decide a skirt instead of my normal red jeans was a good idea. It wasn't too cold yet. I pull it on along with a pair of tights. After putting on my shoes and prosthetic, I head into the main room. Dad had already left, so I decide to shove a bit of breakfast into my bag. I then head outside the apartments. Larry was talking with Todd and Chug, who are guys who live in the apartments as well.
"Hey, guys!" I wave to them as I rush over.
"Hey, Sal," Chug says. "Nice outfit."
"Thanks," I smile, despite it being hidden.
"It's a bold choice, that red," Todd critiques.
"Gee, thanks, Todd," I laugh.
Larry wasn't saying anything. He was just staring at me.
"What?" I ask.
"S-sorry, I just,... didn't realize you had this kind of stuff. It's cool you're breaking gender norms," Larry comments, looking away.
Todd and Chug give each other a knowing look. I tilt my head in confusion.
"Let's get going," Todd says.
Larry POV
God, his fucking OUTFIT! It's so hot! Like, what the hell, being THAT hot should be a crime! I feel like an asshole being like that to him. But I was having a lot of gay panic at the moment. We walk together and soon arrive at the school. We all go to our lockers and meet up in the commons. Another friend of ours was there. Her name's Ashley Campbell, but we call her Ash. She was cool. Ash is a great artist and she's one of my oldest friends. I really enjoy your company.
"Sal! You look great!" Ash exclaims upon seeing Sal.
"Thanks, Ash," Sal mumbles.
His ears seemed red. Ash continues to gush over his outfit until,...
"Nice look, faggot," a sneering voice comments.
We all glare at Travis. Except Sal. He just stares ahead, his shoulders hunched over.
"Leave us alone, Travis," I snap.
"Yeah, Phelps! Keep to yourself, asshole," Ash growls.
Todd says nothing, glaring at Travis coldly. Travis scoffs and walks off. I cross my arms across my chest and glare after him.
"What a dick," I growl.
"I have half a mind to beat his skinny ass to a bloody pulp," Ash hisses.
"It's ok, guys," Sal says quietly. "I've dealt with worse in Jersey,..."
***
It was lunch and Sal was no where to be seen. I was starting to worry. Ash was eating moodily while chatting with Maple, who's one of our other friends. Todd was doing some homework, while also helping Chug who was hardly paying attention.
"I'm going to the bathroom," I announce.
The group mumbles their responses and I leave. I rush to the bathroom, where I'd know Sal probably will be. I enter the room and,...
"...fucking disgusting bitch," a familiar voice sneers.
"Leave me alone, Travis," Sal's small voice comes from inside.
I step in. "Hey, fuck off dickhead."
"Johnson, can't you mind your own fucking business?!" Travis growls.
"Maybe if you fucking left Sal alone we wouldn't have to deal with this shit all the time," I snap.
Sal tries to move away, but Travis stops him. "Where do you think you're going?"
I snapped. I hardly remember the fight, but I specifically recall breaking Travis' nose. There was a lot of blood and yelling. I remember hearing crying from Sal, him begging us to stop, but I didn't. I wanted to fuck Travis' shit up. I wanted to make him pay for torturing Sal all the time.
I came back to reality in the nurse's office. I was holding an ice pack to my swollen eye as the nurse tended to Travis. I glare at him as I lift the ice a little. I hear the principal talking to my mom and Travis' parents through the door.
"You boys are done. Go out and go home with your parents," the nurse instructs.
I exit the office and walk over to Mom. She looks at me worriedly and leads me out to the car. She's silent the whole drive home. Only when we get into our apartment does she speak again.
"Why were you fighting the Phelps' boy?" Mom asks, setting down her keys.
"He was being an asshole," I mumble. "He keeps messing with Sal and I hate it."
"There was no need to punch him, Larry,..."
"I know. I just,... I couldn't control myself. I just, fucking snapped. I couldn't take it anymore," I say quietly.
Mom goes silent, putting her things away. After awhile, she speaks up again.
"Wanna get pizza?"
"What?"
"You were protecting your friend, I have no need to punish you for do what is right. Just refrain from getting into fights in the future," Mom smiles at me.
I smile back.
