((A/N: Aha...ha...ha. Hi..I'M SORRY, OK? MERRY CHRISTMAS!! I don't think I can go on. Soooo for those of you who wanted more and stuff, I'm giving an epilogue. Not the best apology gift, but the best I can do. I'm working on two other stories right now, and writer's block is seriously punching me in the groin. If anyone would like to request a ship (you can find the ships I can write on my profile. Or ask me in the comments), I'd love my next one to be a modern au. Promise to update more frequently than this was.
ヾ(´▽';)ゝ But anyway, here goes! Our final adventure for now!! And remember, this is my rendition. It isn't going to follow the book exactly. ))Thomas takes one more look at the Maze, before jumping through the hole he'd discovered during a run he'd taken last week. Newt helped balance him after he came flying out.
"Welcome to the other side, wherever the hell this is." His voice was comical, but he wasn't smiling. How could he? So many people are dying trying to get here, and they don't even know where here is.
Minho comes up behind him with a small smile on his face. Chuck was latched fearfully to his arm. His face tried to show his bravery, but the death grip he had on Minho's arm gave his true feelings away. "Chuck, let off a bit, mate." He turns his attention back to Newt and Thomas. "At least we made it together."
Theresa shakes her head. "Don't sound so optimistic yet, we still have to leave this area. If we could get through the hole, so can the Grievers, this is the Griever Hole, and I don't think our brave martyrs can hold them for much longer. Our best bet would be for you to check out that computer we found a few moments ago."
"Good that."
It had been a year since the incident in the Maze. Minho was conscious and almost back to normal. He still couldn't quite move his legs like he used to, and his mind was pretty messed up. He often hallucinated. It was a miracle he made it to the portal in the first place. They'd also received a female addition: Theresa. Thomas and Theresa had a special connection. Telepathy between them and them alone.
It didn't take a rocket scientist to know that Newt was a little jealous of how close they were. Even Thomas could tell.
Still, he made it his duty to protect her, for Thomas, even though he didn't really trust-- or like-- her. He kept her imprisoned most of the time, actually. This was a rare occasion where he actually found her useful.
Thomas shares a glance with Newt. He hadn't let go of his grip on him. Their relationship, as you could tell, is no longer secret.
"I hadn't meant to hold on for so long, but since you gave me that look, I ain't moving." Newt says, his voice surprisingly airy, considering the circumstances.
"I wasn't planning on stopping you. I still don't." Thomas replies snappily, but with a hint of a smile. Still, the suspense was killing him, and he was just glad that he had someone to keep his mind focused on the task, and not the suspense.
Minho was tapping frantically at the keys on the computer. The dim glow of the console gave the area a spooky atmosphere, and made these rugged teens feel the cold claw of dread. How long is this going to take? They thought.
No one had the answer.
Finally, after a couple minutes that felt like 8 hours, another body slips through the portal.
And then another.
And then another.
And so on and so on until 12 beaten and broken survivors had safely made it to the other side. They all exchange a nervous look, but each wear a pained smile. They were almost free.
"Quick!" One of them said. "There are still a lot out there. We fought off what we could but, we ain't super heroes--those are bloody Grievers."
"I don't know how much time we've got left." Another piped in.
As if to answer their question, the computer made a happy beeping sound, and Minho turns around with a proud grim on his face. "I don't know what I just did, but it's got to be better than what's out there."
Nearby, a clanking sound reverberated against the walls of the small--well--room, it seems. This was a faintly familiar sound to them, as the Gates made the same noise as they closed or opened. They realised, when the noise stopped, that a door was opening--their only hope from the increasing cranking noises the Grievers were making at that exact moment.
There was no thinking involved. Especially when a Griever popped out through the hole, shuddering to a stop after it landed with a loud crash. Everyone bolted for the open--wait...
The clanking noise starts up again. Was it closing? Their eyes strained to look in the doors direction as they ran and had the bittersweet discovery that the door was in fact closing.
Newt squeezes Thomas's hand, and keeps Minho in his sight. He wasn't going to lose those two again over a shuckin' door closing. Thomas returns the grasp and speeds up in running. He was used to running, but not after everything they'd just gone through. It was difficult, but he wouldn't give up. He didn't want Newt to feel responsible for any other injuries. Not if he could help it.
The Griever scooted and scrambled behind them, trying to catch up. One of the boys who had made it through at the last minute tripped. Before he could get his bearings, the sound of his agonized screams filled in their ears, pushing them to keep going. His sacrifice would not be in vain.
They last person passes through the door right before it slides shut. An eerie silence is all that welcomes them. Besides, of course, the long corridor illuminated with blinking red lights that lead the way.
Everyone shares a look. Theresa starts walking, her footsteps like a monster taking deep breaths in the silence. Though they had escaped the more imminent danger, they still had a feeling that the worst was yet to come.
Still, if Thomas had Newt and Newt had Thomas, they were certain they'd be okay.
