Chapter 21: Siege
While I was away Morroe took it upon himself to make Moorwin and me armor. I stood a void of emotion while Jonah buckled me in to the seamless armor. It was extremely light steel, which seemed to mold to my body. I may have not looked nervous but on the inside I was a shaking little girl clutching her mother’s skirts. When Jonah finished he left me on my own. Closing my eyes I evened my breathing. In out, in out. Rustling at the door snapped me from mu calm. My hand flashed to my sword drawing it from the scabbard pointing it to the invader’s throat.
“I would prefer it if you didn’t kill me.” Elijah chuckled.
“Sorry.” I blushed for my brash behavior. I replaced my sword in its sheath. “Elijah,” I began. Instead of speaking Elijah stepped forward pulling me into a hug. I wrapped my arms around him excepting his comfort.
“Achem.” Looking up I noticed Dimitri in the door looking peeved at Elijah and I’s proximity.
“Dimitri.” I stuttered nervously. I looked back and forth between the two men. They looked like exact copies of each other. “Elijah you need to tell him.”
“Ariya,” Elijah’s face contorted in indecision.
“You owe it to him Elijah. He has the right to know.” Dimitri looked confused and angered, like we were keeping a huge secret from him; which we were. “If you don't I will.” I gave him the ultimatum.
“Your right, he does have the right to know.”
“What are you two talking about?” Dimitri fumed. Turning away from me he faced Dimitri; he sighed before beginning to speak.
“Dimitri,” Dimitri’s eyes zeroed in on Elijah’s face. “I’m sorry, I left you. I endangered you and your mother, and I left you.” Recognition dawned on Dimitri’s face.
“You’re my father.” I quickly felt out of place in the family reunion.
“I leave you two alone.” I said stepping between them I walked out of the tent. People were now rushing about preparing for the siege. Taking a deep breath I went in search of Katarina. I found her locked in a tight embrace with Jonah their lips barely touching.
“Alright then.” I laughed. They leapt apart their faces flushed.
“Ariya, um I can explain.” Jonah began.
“No need. There is nothing wrong with love. But can I borrow Kat for a little bit?”
“Sure be my guest. I’ll make sure to come say goodbye before we leave.” Jonah promised her kissing her cheek. Once he left I gave Katarina a knowing look.
“Stop it.” She laughed shoving me playfully.
“Come on, I want to talk to you.” I grabbed her hand and began to tug her towards a redwood with a low hanging branch. Dropping her hand I began to climb. A few feet up I glanced down at her. “Are you coming?” She rolled her eyes and began to climb the tree. Instead of her usual loose dresses and skirts she wore woolen pants and an animal skin vest. Smiling I continued to climb, higher and higher we went. We were nearly to the top when we decided to stop.
