1. What was the last thing you lost that never turned up? Write a story describing somebody stealing it.
2. Think of your favourite place by the coast. Describe the scene if the sea level were 38 metres higher.
3. Think of your last job interview or school lesson. In what way would it have been different if you were a different enthnicity?
4. Think of a wish. Now imagine the granting of the wish has unexpected consequences.
5. You wake up in the wrong body. What's the first thing you do?
6. You find a baby kangaroo by the side of the road. How did it get there?
7. Think about your favourite teacher. If he or she was hiding a secret what would it be?
8. Think of a child in your life. Write a page designed to make him/her fall on the floor with laughter.
9. Imagine you could do the last week again. What would you do differently?
10. Which two of your friends get on the least well? What if they were the only ones who could crack a code and they had to work together?
11. Look at the last message you sent. What would have happened if you'd accidentally sent it to the second-to-last person in your message history?
12. If you lived 200 years ago, what job would you be doing?
13. Look into your family tree. Is there somebody who moved away? Make up an explanation.
14. Look at the dating section in your local paper. Write a fictional account about the first date between one of the advertisers and a reader.
15. Next time you have a dream, write it down. Write a story continuing the dream.
16. You find a letter from your grandfather that was never sent. Why not?
17. Think of somebody younger than you - a brother, sister or friend. Imagine he/she wants to become your superhero sidekick. How would he/her try to impress you?
18. Think about the more prudish person you know. Now sit him/her next to somebody behaving inappropriately in a doctor's waiting room.
19. Take your neighbourhood in 10 years' time. Write an opening describing your street.
20. Think of a nursery rhyme. What if it was set in modern day America?
21. Look at the nearest object to you. What would its life be like if it had a brain?
22. Think of a villain from history. Imagine you're sat next to each other on a bus.
23. Think about your most offbeat friend. What if he/she had to save the world?
24. Ask your parents how they met. In what way would their first meeting have been different if your dad had had a parrot on his shoulder?
25. What is the least convenient personal habit for a detective? Write about that detective.
