POV: Ishimaru

Ishimaru woke up to the sound of his alarm blaring. He slammed the off button, not wanting to hear that awful sound again. He settled back into his bed and looked up at the calender across the room.

August 31st

He hadn't circled the date or done amything special to it. The box marked 31 just lingered there, seemingly mocking the poor boy. A birthday was usually something people were excited about and wait about every year to come. Not Ishimaru. With every birthday passed, since his 19th, they only seemed to get lonlier.

This is due to Ishimaru having nobody to celebrate with. His dad had unfortunately passed of old age half a year after his 18th birthday. After that, he felt no need to celebrate without his dear father there. The only one who had celebrated it with him in the first place.

The boy layed there, unable to fall back to sleep due to the thoughts keeping him up. There was no way he was going to get up either. He just snuggled further into the covers, hoping to sleep this lonely day away.

Suddenly, the ringing of a doorbell could be heard throughout the apartment. Ishimaru groaned and stood up, walking towards the door sluggishly. He didn't really care who saw him in this tired state. That was until he opened the door.

Ishimaru looked up at the taller male, immideitly recognizing him as his best friend, Mondo Owada. His eyes widened has he realized that he was only half dressed and hadn't made a single effort to get ready for the day.

"Sup, Taka" Mondo greeted, looking down at the smaller boy. "Did I wake ya up?"

Ishimaru felt his face heat up a bit. "Mondo! What are you doing here so early?" he asked, avoiding the question.

"S' about 1 in the afternoon, bro." Mondo stated, checking the watch on his wrist.

Ishimaru thought back to earlier. He had indeed not checked the time. He finally noticed the grocery bag Mondo held in his hand. "My apologies. You may come in and put your things on the counter. If you'll excuse me, I need to get ready."

"No need t' be so formal..." Mondo mumbled as he made his way to the counter. Ishimaru shut the door and walked over to his bedroom, pressing his back to the door and sliding down as he did.

He buried his face in his hands, feeling it's warmth. "I'm not even wearing pants..." he mumbled before composing himself and heading for the bathroom.

Ishimaru walked out of his room, much more ready for the day then he was before. He walked towards the kitchen to join Mondo, who was sitting on one of the stools.

Mondo turned his attention to the boy. "Sorry, I should've asked before showin' up uninvited." he apologized.

"No, no! It's fine!" Ishimaru assured, avoiding eye contact with the other boy. "So, what's in the bag?"

Mondo looked as if he was about to answer, before asking a question. "Since ya just woke up, you haven't eaten today, right?" Ishimaru nodded. "Alright, mind if I use yer fridge then?"

Ishimaru was curious, but didn't ask anything. "Go ahead."

He pulled out a small white box out of his bag and placed it in the fridge. "Alright, how bout' we go get ya somethin' to eat. There's a small cafe we could go to, if ya don't want to eat too much."

Ishimaru beamed, forgetting any negative thoughts he had on today. "You know I like cafes."

Mondo grabbed the keys to his motorcycle. "Lets get goin' " the taller man grinned.

Ishimaru and Mondo walked back into the smaller boy's apartment, closing the door behind them. They took their shoes off and headed back towards the kitchen. "Alright!" Mondo yelled. "Are ya ready now?"

Ishimaru looked a bit confused, but let out a small 'yes.'

Mondo brought out the white box, setting it on the counter. He opened it up revealing a small cake, the words 'Happy Birthday!' written in red frosting. Mondo smiled wide at the other man, waiting for some sort of reaction.

Ishimaru looked a bit surprised. "How'd you know?" he asked, not remembering telling him.

"I asked a last year. I was hopin' to do somethin' for the the next birthday that came up." Mondo told him, pulling out a small pack of candles. "Ya like red, right?"

"Y- yeah. That's my favorite color." Ishimaru stuttered out. He was in a bit of shock from finding out how much his friend seemed to care for him.

Mondo stuck a few candles in and lit them with the lighter he had in his pocket. "Alright, You can blow em' out without the singin' " he gave Ishimaru an awkward smile.

Ishimaru looked into his best friend's eyes for just a moment. They looked breathtaking in the light of the candles. It took a moment before he took his gaze away from Mondo's eyes and blew out the candles.

Mondo cheered, and beamed at his friend again. "What did ya wish for?"

Ishimaru chuckled a bit. "Sorry, you know I can't tell you that." He smiled up at the biker.

"Aw, c'mon, ya can't even tell your best friend? Your bro?" Mondo put his arms on the counter, laying his chin down on them. Ishimaru just continued to smile at him. "S' whatever, let's just eat the cake."

"Right, the knives are behind you." Ishimaru pointed towards the wall behind Mondo.

After they'd both finished the slice of cake they'd got, Mondo reached into the bag once more, pulling out a small box. "I got ya somethin' else as well." he stepped around the counter to join his friend on the stools. He handed him the box.

Ishimaru stared at the box in silence for a while, sort of shocked once again. He remained silent as he unwrapped and opened the small box to reveal a necklace with a tiny ruby colored gem in the middle.

"I got it for ya because I know ya like red. It also matches your eyes." Mondo explained, turning away from the boy slightly to hide the fact that his face was a bit red.

A tear rolled down Ishimaru's cheek as he looked back up at Mondo.

Mondo let out a surprised noise and stood up. "Sorry, is it that bad-"

Ishimaru got up and buried himself in the other's chest, wrapping his arms around him. Mondo was taken aback by this action, but remained still. "Thank you... so much.." Ishimaru nearly sobbed into the other, extremely overwhelmed by how much happiness he was feeling.

Mondo wrapped his arms around Isimaru as well. "You're welcome, Taka." he mumbled softly into the other's hair.

And for once in a long time, Ishimaru didn't feel so alone on his birthday.
