Introducing Amiri of Caro―otherwise known as Light-Fingers. He first appears as a minor figure with a mysterious past in my published medieval adventure novel "Tedenbarr of Have Lath."

Read on for some introduction information, or skip ahead to part two for the vignettes.

Amiri is from a country that is somewhat analogous to Ancient North Africa,in an almost ancient time.

Amiri's most beloved family currently consists of his mother, little brother and best friend Iset. His father's been gone a long time and most likely will not return. In fact the man has been away so long that he was declared dead, and Amiri's mother remarried. She is a nurse who is always working, and it has fallen on Amiri to take care of Yakov.

Amiri is not at all close to his auntie, Marta. She moved in after The War of the Five Kingdoms, and was supposed to help take care of Yakov when mother is at the medical school, but Marta is never around, instead choosing to pursue her own interests. In a culture where one is supposed to greatly value children, this is an unforgivable crime in Amiri's eyes.

Amiri is fiercely independent, grown used to being the oldest man in the family, and is very protective of his mother and his little brother (moreso because Yakov was born deaf). This protectiveness spills over to his best friend and any other waif who is alone in the world, as he hates people who neglect children, and will go out of his way to see abandoned children to a safe place.

Amiri's favourite pastime is learning―it doesn't matter what the subject is, he'll soak it up hungrily and seek more knowledge. Part of this stems from his jumbled forays into attending school as a kid. Circumstances keep stopping him from going, and forced him to rely on street smarts to make his way in the world.

Many people in the kingdom of which Caro is the capital have various inborn Skills that manifest at different times as they grow. Think of an artist who has always been good, or an architect who always sees exactly how to build his next project. Which sounds good, but slothfulness and pride are the downfall of many...

Amiri's greatest rivals (enemies really) are members of a dangerous group known as the Dark Hoods. They specialise in kidnapping and extortionism with a side of terrorism thrown in. Amiri's first encounter with them is when he rescues Iset and the noble girl she serves from a kidnapping attempt. Ever since then, the Dark Hoods hold a grudge against Amiri, and he has to constantly look over his shoulder.

He is quick on his feet and also has a witty response for just about every occasion. He's also very good with sleight-of-hand, which later earns him his famed nickname. Amiri dreams of one day travelling the known world and making a name for himself, and unbeknownst to him, that day may come far more abruptly than he expects. . .
