Alexis Nunez
The next morning I met with Darnell at Slauson cafe. It became our morning weekend spot to get breakfast. "So what's up?" "Listen we need to talk." "About? Your tone sound like this will get real depressing real quick." "Crenshaw is becoming a magnet school, so if I don't get it I'm moving back to Nevada or Germany. I just don't know how much time we have together and I'm not putting you into a long distance relationship." "Oh, yeah depressing. Listen, it's cool. Don't worry about it, whatever happens know I'm here for you and as far as you leaving we can still be friends right. I love your FaceTime calls of you just admiring yourself in the camera." "The one time I'm being serious you wanna joke." "I don't know what you want me to do. My boyfriend school is shutting down. he's leaving and breaking up with me." "Don't be like that." "Like What I said what you just said." "Alexis." "Okay, I'll leave it. Si no estás preocupado no estaré." "No clue what that means. But it's hot when you speak Spanish." "If you aren't concerned I won't be. Are we done? I have practice in an hour." "Uh yeah sure." "Okay, text me I guess?" "Okay." I left the cafe driving back home changing into practice clothes. I didn't really have practice but the frustration in my body made me need to work out so I went to the gym.The next day, I had school with finals coming up and competition season coming to a close with our NCA victory junior year was coming to a close. "Hey Jordan." "Whats up?" "Does something always have to be up for us to talk?" "Yes, what?" "That was mean one, and two I was wondering what's up." "I'm fine Lex seriously." "Okay." I said walking away as Simone approached the locker. The school day went on how it usually does after school Grace texted me saying she was home it's Dillion and not to worry about him. She also said to send her a picture of me and Spence at the party tonight.
I went home straightening my hair and redoing my makeup. I texted Olivia that I'd pick her up for the gala. I got dressed in a sequin body on dress and black heels. I picked Olivia up driving to the function. "Why does it seem so off today." "Because your boyfriend broke up with you and mine and I are on a break." "That could be it. How are you, though I mean have you talked to Leslie?" "She's not answering my call but I'm good." "Really?" "Yeah, Kinda." "I won't go into it right now but I'm always here." She nodded looking out the window.
"Well I never thought I'd be this into a drink called cuddles on the beach, but here we are." "Mocktails my favorite." I smirked standing next to the boys. "Yo for real this parties insane." "And all paid for by the boosters." "The football programs left over money, Lex. That's the crazy part." "My friends and family are just ten miles away fighting to keep their school open. Meanwhile we literally watching money melt off an ice sculptures." "That's Beverly Hills Spence." "Is that a cuddles on the beach?" A girl asked walking up to Jordan. "Your fan clubs back." "We missed those girls deeply huh Jay." "Mm nope not my type." "Simones got you wide open like that?" "Whatever, okay." "I'm just glad you moved on to one girl." "Still mad." "Not mad just saying how it is." "Simones not even interested anyway." "Uh you mean the Simone that spent all that time creating a dope ass highlight reel?" "Really? She's in love." "The one who moved herself out into a hotel, just so you could have your life back." "Oh yeah she doesn't like you." "Yeah you right shes not feeling for you." Jordan shook his head handing me his drink. "Good luck man." "That's crazy, relationship expert." "What?" "Nothing." I sipped the drink. "So what's up with you and D?" "What do you mean we broke up I guess. He's moving if this whole thing doesn't work out. He already told me that." "He also told me he didn't want to leave you like that." "It is what it is." "Come Lexi you and I both know you love him." "Wow you really reading me like that. You haven't done that since we met." "You're right, but I know you. You never felt this way with Jordan or you would've fought." "It's not that I don't want to fight for him to stay. It's just not my place to fight, I know barely anything about it." "But you want him to stay." "Yes pendejo." He chuckled pushing me slightly.
Close to the end of the party Spencer called me telling me to meet him at slauson cafe. "Why?" "For your man, come on change and come please." "You're lucky I keep clothes in my car." "See." I could tell he was smiling on the other side. "I'll see you in ten." I went to my car changing in the backseat to mom jeans and one of Darnell's hoodies I stole. I tucked the hoodie into the pants switching out my shoes for vans. When I got to the cafe Spencer was already there. "Hey, where's Leila." I smiled standing next to them. "She has to deal with her pops." I nodded watching Darnell and Kia get the people going.
"I didn't think you'd come." Darnell said as I walked up to him. "I wasn't planning on it but Spencer is team D all day. So I'm here for you." "Will you expect my apology now, I know I haven't texted you and that's because of planning and everything." "I know. And I'm sorry I left the other day I should've asked what you needed." "But you're here now." "Yeah, I am." He smiled kissing my cheek. "I missed you." "I missed you too." "How was the party?" "Mocktails and rich kids. How do you think It went." "Yeah I see your point." He chuckled the laughter stopped when a guy came in the cafe. "The meeting to decide the fate of south Crenshaw has been moved up to tomorrow." Gasps filled the room. I shook my head looking at Darnell.
I took Spencer back to the Bakers that night. He wanted to say his goodbyes to Coach Baker before he was to be out of the office.
The next morning, I woke up getting ready to go over to Grace's house. I got ready a white T-shirt, a denim skirt and sneakers. I drove the ten minutes parking in front of the house. Dillion opened the door with a sad face. "What's wrong?" "A lots been going on." He said letting me in. "Hey." "Hey." Darnell mumbled. "How Can they not see what their doing?" "Hey what'd I miss." Spencer said walking in the house. "Mom and a couple other parents went to talk to the president of the school about south Crenshaw but she didn't listen." "They're set on converting the school man, there's nothing we can do about it." "South Crenshaw was a part of dads legacy, so now I'm not gonna be able to share that with him." "When will people learn that you can't keep taking resources out of the neighborhood and expect the good to be standing." "What's that?" I asked looking at the frame. "It's a resource."
That night I went to the board meeting with Darell, Kia, Chris and Coop. Spencer was planning a talk about re enrolling at south Crenshaw. I was sad about but him being there was better for him and his family, his fathers legacy. At the meeting he said what he needed to say. "So as of this fall I will be re enrolling as a student at south Crenshaw high." Everyone was in shock that he would come back from Beverly the community clapped for him. "South Crenshaw deserves a shot at being great. I respectfully ask that you think long and hard about that before you cast your vote."
We all met up back at the house, "so you're staying?" "Yes as long as I get my girl back." I smiled hugging him. "Was I ever not yours?" "A couple hours." I rolled my eyes. "Besito." I puckered my lips and he kissed them. "You going to New York over summer?" "Maybe maybe not. Depending on you. I'm not wasting My time without you when I don't know how long I have." "But New York with your family, when do you ever see them?" "So far twice this year." I chuckled. "Come on Lex." "Okay Nell, chill with that." He kissed me again walking in the house. We cuddled on his bed before I went back home. "I'll see you." "Text me when you get home." "Yes." I smiled kissing him again. I went outside hugging Coop goodbye for her tour. Then I took myself and Spencer back to Beverly. I went home getting ready for bed when there was a knock at my door.
"Hey, What are you doing here?" "I asked Miss Grace if it was cool if I stayed the night and she said yeah." I looked down at his gym bag smiling. "I was just there." I groaned before smiling at him. "Now What animation are we watching I was thinking Aladdin." "Okay." I followed him upstairs. He put his stuff in the corner laying in bed. We watched the movie before falling asleep.
