Planning is very important. In my experience, it's always better to pre-plan your story. Now, this doesn't mean you have to plan out every single little moment that will happen in your book. Here's what it means.

Start with basic plot. What is your story about? Sketch out the basic theme of your story, along with any specific events or scenes that you have in mind. You can make a word document for it, or you can use Wattpad's 'Story Notes' feature for it. I usually use Google Docs. Also draft a rough timeline of important events which you can consult when you write the story.

After that, work on creating the environment your story is set in. Is it a dystopian fiction? Is it set in the past? Is it set in the present? What kind of society do the characters live in?

Next, work on your characters. Who is/are your protagonist(s)? What are they like? What is their role in this story? I usually make a list of traits that my character has. On thing you should make sure is that you make your characters realistic! You can't have a character that speaks ten languages, plays five sports and is also good at art, dance and writing. That's just unrealistic.

Here's a character from one of my books which I haven't published anywhere yet, to give you an idea of how I do it:

You can see that I kind of just play around a bit with it. But it's a good starting point. You can change things or edit it out later.

As an alternative you can just 'go with the flow' instead of planning everything out in advance. It's just that if you wing it, there are more chances of you succumbing to writer's block and running out of ideas. But fear not! Later in this book, I'll tell you ways to deal with writer's block as well. So if you're intuitive (like I am sometimes), just skip the planning and go right ahead to the writing part.

You've reached the end of published parts.
