Chapter 9: The Duel

S: well people break promises- just ask your captain

Erwin: I think you need to be taken to lockup for discipline

S: like hell I am. I wanna see how many men it takes you to make that happen

L (Levi): I have a better idea. You got a knife?

S: of course I have knife I'm not stupid.

L: how about a little friendly challenge. I beat you in a fight you go to pick up for 2 weeks and don't escape like you have previous times

S: stalker

L: you win and that doesn't happen

S: so I get nothing?

L: fine then o don't order you around for a day

S: Tch like you could. Fine.

He took of his hood and pulled a knife out of his jacket. I grabbed mine out and we jumped down to the ground

Erwin: now hold on a minute

L: it's fine

We circled

L: why do you hate me so much all of a sudden?

S: you left me to live with a cereal killer

L: you could have left

S: and go where exactly? You are a Captain. You have citizenship. You could have at least visited me.

L: it not that's simple

S: yeah it kind of is

I lunged at him continuously switching knife hands so he couldn't tell where I was striking. I gashed his shoulder but just barely.

S: you're rusty.

L: I haven't exactly been using knives

S: oh come on. Where's the Levi that took joy in taking down five MPs with a pocket knife?

He didn't reply

S: I get it. You can't run from the past, it's come knocking on your door again

We continued to suck and dodge as disarmed each other. I brought him to the ground but before I could punch him in the face two scouts pulled me off.

"Calm down you won"

L: let her go

"What?! But capt-"

S: in ten underground you don't tap out

L: you don't stop fighting til you're out cold

S: and then whoever knocked you decides whether you live or die

We continued to punch and dodge at a progressively faster pace.

S: so you remember the last thing you said to me before you left

L: huh?

S: you told me you had my back. And then you stabbed it quite literally 6 years later

Trigger warning: suicidal stuff

L: what did you do after?

Suddenly I heard Annie whisper to me- show him the scar

I pushed him back and pointed to a big scar across my neck

S: you really want to know? I did this. I tried to kill myself. One month after you left I learned I couldn't die.

Arwin POV

I had never seen Levi like this. It was a mixture of worry, fear, and guilt. He completely froze. He didn't fight back as Sage tackles him and punched him until he was out cold. Tears were steaming down her face. Form what to looked like none of her comrades has ever seen her this unwound before.

E: pull her off and have her go back with the other cadets

The girl ran over to a pale blonde cadet. Her tears still streamed down her face. Not with anger- but hate. Pure hate. She was enraged.

Shhh calm down it's ok... she said hugging Sage

Levi has gotten up and told everyone he was going to his quarters. I gave him a good to hours before talking to him.

E: Do you want to talk about what just happened out there Levi

L: Not really Erwin.

E: not even over tea?

L: I hate you

I left a brought back some tea. Levi began to sip it.

E: did you have any idea?

L: no

E: I'm putting it up to you how you deal with this, but she's gonna be in your squad once there's an opening so you are going to have to figure it out. That's an order.

L: I will

E: now about the Eren kid...

Meanwhile in the cadet mess hall...

Sage POV

Eren: you're kidding me right?

Reiner: nope, Sage beat him in a one on one fight

Jean: no freaking what but Captain Levi's a legend

*turns to Sage silently eating next to Annie

Jean: come on how'd yah do it

S: wouldn't you like to know

Jean: ahhh come on ple-

Annie has gotten up and knocked him to the ground

A: anyone else looking for an interview?

Everyone was silent

A: thought so.

Later that night...

A: the song you sung to us that first day, that was about him wasn't it

S: yeah

A: look I- I really like you Sage and I'm gonna join the scouts

S: really

A: yeah

We both looked at each other and began to blush. I leaned in and slowly kissed her. She turned red and began to kiss me back. First slowly and then quicker.
We collapsed down on my bed laying side by side.

A: I'm never going to leave your side. I'be got you back now. And I'm gonna keep my promise. Ok?

A single tear rolled down my face. I pressed my back against her chest.

S: ok

A: Sage why did you kill Marco? What did you hear?

S: nothing, but I knew if Reiner and Berthdolt were in trouble you would be too.

A: so you'd kill for me?

S: I mean I've killed for a pair of shoes before so...

A: way to ruin the moment

Sasha and Micasa came in later. They probably stared at us but I don't care. I haven't slept this soundly in a long time.
