It is exactly thirty-seven minutes until first hour starts. The school was filling with teens. Some eager to talk to their friends while others where just eager to get the week over with so they can go home, go to parties, or just do whatever normal teenagers do.
Unlike me. I actually like school. You learn new things everyday; plus there are books everywhere to read. Man, I love to read.
Oh, how mean of me! I have not introduced myself yet!
My name is Gwendolynn Casey and I am a sophomore. Just turned 16 last month, in September. It is now October and I am dreading the day the Halloween party comes. This year I have to go, no matter what I say, dressed as a stupid cat. Now that wouldn't be so bad if only I didn't have to be so socially awkward. It's just so hard for me to talk to people with confidence. I mean, people always talk to me, tell me I'm... like... you know... pretty, I guess. I just do not see it at all. My hair is naturally dark red, but I dye it a brighter red color (since I absolutely hate dark colors), and average green eyes. Really the main thing that distinguishes me from everybody else is I am only four foot seven. Pretty short for a tenth grader, is it not?
Anyway . . . School . . .
Thirty-four minutes left until first hour. Band is my first hour. Nothing like playing a trumpet first thing in the morning. It's also quiet fun blasting the saxophones when we have high notes. Ahh, the pleasure in giving people pain indirectly to those that think they are all that. What makes it even better is when you have a partner in crime to help out with those things.
Speaking of, mine just poked her head around the corner.
Long blonde hair swooshed around the hall corner, with big, blue eyes meeting mine. "Gwenny!" She dropped her bag and plopped herself next to me. "It's been so long since I've seen you!"
"Minna, it's only been two days. . ." I love Minna to death, but I just can't always deal with her hyper personality so early in the day.
The perky girl stared intently at me, her eyes narrowing, brows furrowing. This meant she was trying to think of something, bless her poor soul. It wasn't long before she grasped both of my hands, leaning in as close as she could without making it even more awkward. A big, devious grin was plastered on her face, her eyes wide yet again. "I know what we need to do, Gwenny! It's so obvious, how did I know see it before?"
I'm sure my face had such a dumb look on it. This situation was confusing, then again, anyday with any outburst from Minna was confusing. "And th-that is?" That came out quite concerned and worrysome.
"At the halloween party, we're gonna get you a boyfriend!" She clapped her hands together, letting mine fall to my lap. Normally, I have some kind of comeback to her wild ideas, but this was the first time I was ever speechless. "Just think about it Gwenny, you and somr handsome guy walking down the street together, hanging out together, doing things you shouldn't together-"
"Minna!" My speechless spell didn't last all that long. "You-you know how bad I am at talking to others! It's. . . just so hard." To be honest, I was a little ashamed of myself. I have tried talking to others, but I usually end up mumbling so much it sounds like an alien language or I start breathing so heavy that I'm about to pass out. Minna and a few others think it's just a nervous tick, that I'm afraid of leaving embarrassing memories in others' heads.
"Okay, but you didn't say no to finding a boyfriend. So you are up to it, right?" It's not a lie, I have wanted to know what it's like, but not as much as others would think. I would be happy just to have a friend, nothing more to that relationship. Minna was staring at me, waiting for an answer. All I could give her was a shake of my head. The blonde gave a big sigh and rubbed her temples. "Look, Gwen, you are going to have to find someone else soon. I know it's hard for you, but I don't want you to be alone for your last two years of high school."
That's right, I always seem to forget. Minna is a senior, two years older than me. The thought always slips my mind since we've been together through everything. She helped me learn to read and write(although she wasn't very good at it herself), we went on vacations together, we even celebrated birthdays together. She's going to graduate this year and move on with her life, making new friends and having good times of her own, while I'm stuck here, without my best friend.
The realization of it almost made want to cry. Almost. Luckily, a few of Minna's friends interrupted before it could come to that. Their voices sounded familiar, but their names slipped my mind. Two boys and a girl(at least I think. Sometimes it's hard to tell in this day and age, what with younger guys having slender bodies and some girls having flat chests).
Minna, after realizing I was staring at the three like a fool, introduced them. "Gwenny, this is Shiro, Bun, and Nero."
Shiro waved and gave a big grin, his short brown hair a mess. "I've heard a lot about you, miss Gwendolynn. I'm a junior, just incase you didn't know."
The smaller one of the bunch(the one I thought was a girl) nodded his head, his chestnut hair pulled back in a lazy pony, and said in a surprisingly low voice, "Just call me Bun." That was all he said.
Then there was the slender tall male, his black hair flowed over his forhead and around his neck. Oh great, someone who willingly dyes their hair dark. He crouched down and tried to make eye contact with me. When I refused to look at him, he just stuck out his hand and gave a big, toothy grin. "I'm Nero. I'm not sure we've ever spoken, but we have crossed paths before. Not to mention we have a few classes together!" Nero didn't seem to be letting up on the hand shake he wanted. I just grabbed the tip of his index finger and gave a small finger shake. A low chuckle came from him. "Heh, I heard you were a shy girl, but this is more than I expected!"
At this point I was becoming a little uncomfortable, so I looked to Minna for some help. My pleading look said it all. She stood and had the others follow her, chatting about something. I felt a little better now that they were gone, but something about them felt uneasy to me.
RIIIING.
The five minute bell rang, indicating that school was about to begin. I grabbed my bag and joined the crowd heading into the band room.
