You made your way down the dimly lit halls of the dungeons, barely able to make out the door to Snape's classroom. That is, until you ran right into it. You rolled your eyes, rubbing your head, as you heard snickering from behind you. "Nice one, Middlebrook! Nice to see the Queen of Slytherin is on top of her game! Hopefully that isn't a reflection of your Quidditch skills!"
"Shut up, Flint! You and I both know come I can kick your sorry ass on the pitch at any time, on any day," you scowled in annoyance, yanking open the door. You were immediately met by the scent of freshly brewed potions, as you stepped into the classroom. Snape sat at his desk, peering into a pitch black cauldron, sneering, per usual. You weaved your way through the rows of desks, towards the middle of the room. Dropping your books with a thump, you collapsed onto the wooden bench, sighing in exasperation.
You were lost in thought, watching the students file into the dimly lit classroom, chattering idly. You were shaken out of your daze by a familiar voice. "Hey (Y/N/N)! Long time no see, Captain! How is her royal highness doing on this fine Monday morning?" You rolled your eyes as Terence Higgs, took the seat next to you, grinning.
"What did I tell you about calling me that?" You snapped, as he laughed mischievously. Terence had been one of your closest friends since the day you had both arrived at Hogwarts and he also happened to be the Slytherin Quidditch Team's seeker.
"What? You haven't taken to people calling you the Queen of Slytherin? It's been 4 years, (Y/N/N)! Trust me, that nickname isn't going anywhere," Terence taunted, as you smacked his arm playfully, only making his grin widen. "I didn't see you at the feast last night. I thought you'd come sit with the team," Terence continued as he pulled out his books.
"I was going to, but I was suppose I got a bit caught up in the ceremony, with it being Matt's first year and all..." you replied as your friend nodded.
"Oh right! I forgot all about that! I ran into him and Malfoy a little earlier, on the way down here from the Great Hall. Did you know that Harry Potter is finally at Hogwarts! Can you believe that? And that damn hat put the poor sucker in Gryffindor," Terence scoffed.
You were about to respond, when Professor Snape sent a flurry of red sparks into the air, silencing all conversations. You look around, noticing that the rest of the class had joined you and were all seated at various desks around the room.
"Take out a roll of parchment, a quill, and a bottle of ink. You'll be taking notes today," your dull voiced professor drawled, as he waved his wand in front of a dusty chalk board, filling it with paragraphs of writing. The class groaned as they began digging around in their bags, searching for supplies. Snape gave the class a wicked sneer. "Quit your whining! I don't want to hear it! Let's go! What the bloody hell are you waiting for? Copy them down! Now!" Snape demanded as you sighed heavily and picked up your quill.
Time Skip
All that could be heard from within Professor Snape's dark classroom, was the scratching of quills against parchment and the depressed and weary sights of his students. Each minute that passed somehow managed to seem longer than the last and your hand felt as if it were on fire. You sat for what seemed like hours, copying down useless instructions for potions that you would never need to use, your hand burning, when your Professor finally shattered the silence. Just not in the way you had expected.
"Mr Diggory! Your notes are up here, not printed on the back of Ms. Middlebrook's head! Unless there is an exam question on the colour of her hair, I suggest that you pay attention and stop staring," your professor announced, catching you off guard, as the entire class turned to look at Cedric. You kept your eyes glued to the parchment in front of, as you felt the apples of your cheeks turn bright red, the embarrassment burning more fervently than the ache in your hand. You hadn't even noticed that you shared your potions course with the Hufflepuffs. You shook your head as you silently cursed under your breath. This would only lead to rumors and questions, more questions than you had answers for. To your left, Terence elbowed you.
"Looks like someone has an admirer! Why didn't you tell me you had a new boyfriend," Terence teased, making you scoff in annoyance.
"Be quiet, Higgs! I don't even know him! Honestly, how little do you think of me, accusing me of associating with such a pathetic house," you snapped, feeling rather guilty. Before Terence could respond someone cleared their throat, causing you to glance up. Professor Snape was standing directly in front of your desk, glowering down at you disapprovingly. Some of the Hufflepuffs gasped, while a few of your fellow housemates, snickered as you flushed red.
"Ms. Middlebrook, I thought a Slytherin such as yourself would be one to set an example! I thought that you would have known that talking is prohibited, but clearly I was mistaken. Perhaps you'd like to join Mr. Diggory in detention tonight? It seems that you could both learn a lesson in classroom expectations," Snape drawled, before turning to address the rest of the class. "Now, get back to your notes! All of you! Or shall I add more names to today's punishment," Snape demanded, as students quickly turned back to their notes, in fear.
You shot Terence a glare, before returning to your work, making him shrink back, obviously intimidated. You gritted your teeth as you continued to write. Damn it! It's the first damn day of class and I already have a detention! Nice (Y/N)! Nice!
When the bell finally rang, you were already storming out of the door, a scowl imprinted on your features, your (E/C) eyes ablaze with rage. Students from every house jumped out of your way, as you stalked down the hallway, towards your next class. Detention! This day just keeps getting better and better! What a great way to start the year.
