Jumping Jack'o'lanterns

The start of the school year went by quick, September faded into late October. It was a week and a half till Halloween and the castle was certainly ready. Decorations hung from everywhere, pumpkins lined the gardens and at the doorsteps, and the weather turned chilly. Students began to get their sweaters, thick cloaks and jumpers ready for the winter months ahead. Regulus's sweaters started to 'mysteriously'  disappear and apparently Astrid had no clue to where they went. Every time Mel or Evan brought it up to him ( or her) his face got dusted a light pink, but he never attempted at getting them back.

Astrid was enjoying classes mostly, except Herbology, and was doing well grade wise. She quickly rose to the top at Magical Law and after some hard work and late nights, scored top in their first Potions test. She and Severus Snape always seemed to be rivaling Potion scores, though she got along with him quite well, as he was a 'friend' of Regulus's. Mel was doing well in Transfiguration, though it took lots of reading to get there during the summer. Evan was doing average in all classes except Potions and Herbology. He had a stroke of bad luck when it came to Potions class, where Astrid helped him, and a gift in Herbology, where he helped Astrid. Regulus as always, was top in Astronomy, and quite enjoyed the current lessons Ms. Sprout was teaching.  Fourth year was going quite well for the four of them, and they were thoroughly enjoying their time at Hogwarts. (Author- ha, but for how long? Sorry, I'll leave)

It was only four days until Halloween and Astrid already had a problem. The mauraders had hatched their newest prank, and it was driving the Ravenclaw mad. The stone statues and suits of armor would jump out and scream or try to scare who ever was walking by. Pumpkins and Jack 'o' lanterns would float around peoples heads and wouldnt leave them alone everytime someone got within 5 feet of the Halloween plants. Astrid had been caught up in the mess 7 times within a week and she was close to hexing the group of Gryffindors. She wondered why Dumbledore hadn't put a stop to it, but knowing him, he probably found it amusing. Dumbledore had never been right in the head, and the Ravenclaw thought rather low of him.

Regulus had already threatened to hex the group of troublemakers, he was tired of the loud, irritating decorations and was fed up with them jumping out at every turn him and his friends  took. The only Gryffindor that was at all bearable was Remus Lupin, but the Blacks and Blythes weren't allowed to be associated with a family like the Lupins, even though Astrid though he would be nice to talk to. Regulus would have already hexed the Mauraders, if it not for Evan holding him back everytime the snakes and lions passed in the hallways. Everytime Astrid wanted to do something rash, like sending the crimso- clad Mauraders to the hospital wing, she had to remind herself 'their not worth it, their not worth it, their not worth it'. Some of the Ravenclaws and Slytherin had a bet on who would crack first and hex the pranksters into oblivion, Regulus or Astrid. Most bets were on Regulus for obvious reasons.

Money was passed around on Halloween Day, Regulus had snapped. It was on the way to Potions class the morning of Halloween. The Gryffindors were passing them when a trio of Jack'o'Lanterns started spinning around his head. Many curses were thrown that day, but we won't go into that. Astrid had a average Halloween, she always like Christmas more than the orange and black holiday.

The weeks after Halloween went at a snails pace, the leaves seemed to be falling slower and the chill was bearable but so close to being frigid. Astrid was tired of the wait. Christmas was right around the corner, tantalizing close. The chilling days were filled with studying, Marauder pranks, hexes, and nights filled with hot chocolate and coffee.
