( y/n character )
Of course, we were all pretending to sleep in the backseats as they talked. We did this most of the time. I smelt the weed. Kate was trying her best to be the best step-mom. I liked her even though she wasn't even my own step-mom. Gabe needed to appreciate her more before she turned, or died. I had doubts she would've died because Javier always protected her. As Mariana 'woke' up, me and Gabe stopped faking. I rubbed my eyes, "Kate, is that-?" I pretended not to know.
"Roll down the windows!" Javier said, which we did. I looked over at Gabe, who was in a cranky mood, smiling at him. He looked back, giving me back a half-assed smile. I was a friend of Mariana's. I came over to help confront the family during the grief. I was very well-known in the family since I helped take care of their grandpa' before he died. "Here we are." Javier said, pulling into the Junkyard. I opened the van door, hoping out.
"Mari, are you praying for chocolate?" I giggle. She looks up, smiles and nods. I give a quick pray, hoping for chocolate myself. Gabe rolls his eyes, which I respond by sticking my tongue out in a jokingly manner. I then went to my own business, searching for that one chocolate bar. Me and Mari could split it. I hear Gabe and Kate argue, turning my head and watch Gabe storm off. Kate sees me, shaking her head in sadness. "Kate!" I run after her. "I'll talk to him." I say.
"Thank you, Y/N. I know it's not your business but I appreciate you being here." She smiles at me, holding her arms out for a hug. I couldn't help but hug her. She was like a mother to me. "And, take this." She handed me a chocolate bar. "Give it to Mari, split it if you want." She smiles.
"I know you try your best." I smile, taking the bar and then running off after Gabe. "Gabe!" I yelled, looking around. I heard thumping coming from behind a broken down car. I climb up a ladder, hoping over the boxcar. I follow the thumping, "Gabe, I see you!" I giggle before seeing the muerto, as Javi and the others called them, in front of me. It pulled me down, making me face death. I scream, "Help!" I kick it away from me, crawling backwards.
"Y/N!" Gabe rushed to my aid, picking up a random pipe that was loose on the car and swinging it on the muerto's head. As the muerto stopped moving, Gabe helped me up. I heard more footsteps, Javi was running towards us.
"What happened?" Javi asked, his axe and gas can, along with a siphon, in his hands.
"A muerto." Gabe said.
"It attacked me, I thought it was Gabe but then it was," I took a deep breath, still panicked at my near-death experience. "Thank you Gabe, thank you so much." I hug him. He hugs me back, Javi looks around, spotting a trailer and ambulance that hasn't been stripped for parts. Gabe and me go to look inside, only to find out the door is locked. "Hey, over there." I point at the wooden plank. Gabe walks over, pushing it to the side.
"Why were you looking for me anyways?" Gabe ask.
"Well, I saw your argument with Kate and I wanted to make sure everything was alright with you." I say.
"You always try and 'make sure I'm alright' I'm not a useless kid anymore." Gabe says.
"I'm not saying you are, Gabe." I frown. He was pushing my limits. He needed to learn to accept someone's kindness. "I wish you would just realize all I've been trying to do for you is be helpful and kind." I say as we crawl through the boards and into the trailer, unlocking the door.
