Luen Worcestire Liang is a Chinese-American having 7 siblings, being the eldest. His mother passed away after giving birth to the 8th child leaving their father to become depressed and soon committed suicide. Dr. Liang soon had to raise his siblings at a young age not knowing where to go and what to do. With a deep ungrateful fortune, he decided to work and search for scrapes he could sell. He became a working student, at morning he goes to school, some of his siblings decided to stop going to school and 4 of them didn't, the four little children transferred from a private school to a government supported school gaining scholarships like their older brother. The other children who were left on the house are on the care of their 2nd eldest who also stopped going to school. Meanwhile, during the afternoon, Luen begins to go to the dumpsite collecting metals and other goods to sell. In the evening, at 6pm he sells little chips,rugs, and cigarettes on the streets, and at 7 to 8, he goes to a little cheap restaurant to serve as a waiter.
Later, with the poverty hitting them, their house was taken away from them and they started to live at small alleys where mosquitoes and the coldness are always the hindrances on sleeping. They became malnourished yet, Luen became more determined. People were offering help to his family by trying to adopt his siblings leaving them to be far away from each other, but Luen rejected such offers, for him, family means being in whole even in the hardest times.
Even with the poverty hitting them, Luen taught his siblings to do what is right,they may be poor but they'd never steal to satisfy their aching tummies. Later, with all the hardships they had passed through, an old man with no child adopted him and his whole siblings, they all got to go to private schools and have more than 3 meals a day. Luen breathed in relief, finally he wont worry about his dear siblings getting poor education and hard life.
Luen focused on his studies still earning a scholarship granted by the old man. He was the most outstanding student in his class, passing all the exams and almost perfecting them. After such persistence, he graduated as Summa Cum Laude and was called out by different hospitals offering great job payments and positions for him. With all the good fortune coming his way, it's as if things are going the way he wants.
