Freya filled the hole in her stomach with food. Cereal, fruit, croissants. Every meal at her grandparents' house was a buffet. It was insane but Freya certainly wasn't complaining.
She supposed that's really all that old people did. Spend money on food and unnecessary holidays.
She still hadn't talked with her mother. Her grandparents had been trying to talk to her about school and boys but she just played it off like she was really tired so they'd stop.
They did, and once she'd finished eating she made her way into the living room and turned on the tv.
There wasn't anything good on really but she settled for the film 'Chicago'. Freya loved musicals and she knew most of the songs in Chicago so she laid back and held a beige cushion over her chest.
She started to zone out and think about how long she and her mother would be staying with her grandparents for. What had happened between her father and mother. What would occur in these next few days.
She got up and made her way upstairs, not bothering to turn off the tv. Freya got dressed into a floral top and mom jeans, brushed her teeth and loosely braided her hair. She then came back downstairs and returned to her spot on the couch.
She reached for a remote and watched the screen. It was an ad break. She noticed she couldn't pass it forward so she huffed and was about to switch the channel, until something caught her eye.
It was a travel agency ad and it was displaying a couple who'd moved to Canada and started a family there, all the great things, how the snow isn't that bad. It didn't seem like a bad place to live.
To be honest, Freya was bored of her life in England. All it ever did was drizzle and the sky was always grey, every day the same boring interactions and conversations.
Freya decided to bring up that travel ad when they were eating dinner. Freya's grandfather had gone out to work earlier in the day and it was still just her, her mother and her grandmother.
Her grandmother had prepared a feast of cheese an onion pie, beans, proper English chips and an array of different steamed vegetables. They were all tucking in and her mother had a stern yet thoughtful look on her face as Freya explained the pros and cons of Canada that she'd learnt from that ad, speaking with food in her mouth at times.
Freya's mother's face twitched. "Don't speak with your mouth full please, Freya" her mother said coldly, no comment on Canada and the other things Freya had been talking about.
Freya looked away and rolled her eyes. They ate the rest of the meal in silence.
