We all dream of it. The hanging lights, the punch bowl of Kool-Aid, the squeaky clean gym floor, the soft ambience. Homecoming is something we dream of, the perfect outfit, the right colors, the perfect shoes. We consume ourselves with it, these short few hours of our lives that can bring some of the most memorable moments that will be forever engraved in our minds. All for one night, with that one girl, the perfect girl. You've rehearsed every inch of this moment. Every step, every twirl, the glimmer in her eyes, the dip. It's the chance, the opportunity, the moment, we risk it all. All for just one dance.
"Mom! Mom! I think that's enough pictures, okay." Mom bought a new camera and instantly became a professional photographer. I already know half of my photos are going to be blurry because she keeps shaking so much.
"Hold on baby, one more. Let me see the shoes." She said pointing the lens down at my feet. I stuck my foot out, showing off my silver studded loafers. I had to give to Don, I do feel drippy! Auntie Mary was standing behind my mom, trying to hold back her tears.
"Oh Bridgette, let the boy go." She said, waving her to stop. Mom put the camera down, and handed me her keys.
"You fuck up car, I kill you." She said, scaring the life out of me.
"Go have fun baby." Auntie Mary said, leading me out the door. I took one last look at my outfit and headed for Danielle's house.
I got to Danielle's house an hour early, but I sat in the car contemplating what I was going to say. Thousands of thoughts running through my mind, but one that plagued me the most: Does she know I'm 'The Vigilante'? I had to find out the truth, and if she told anyone. Strange how circumstances work, I finally get to be with the girl I want, but risk being outed by my biggest secret. Either way, I had to make the best of this night, the best of homecoming. I stepped out of the door and headed for her front door. Before I could knock the door opened.
"Jake?" this tall, light skin guy asked.
"Yes." I said, clearly my throat.
"Oh dude, we've been waiting for you." He whooshed me into the house. I followed him into the living room. It looked much bigger this time, without all of the people. It was two other guys with big curly hair and small beards sitting on the couch.
"Danielle's upstairs bro. You can chill with us until she's done." one of them said. He went over into the kitchen, while I sat in between the two on the couch. The awkwardness and eeriness of the room piled on heavy. I could feel them judging, staring me down like wolves.
"So you the one huh?" the guy to my left said.
"I thought you'd be taller." the guy to my right said, stroking his beard.
"I've got that before." I replied. The guy to my left lit a small blunt, and blew the smoke in my face. I could feel him testing me; I tried to not inhale or cough.
"You smoke Jake?" he asked me.
"Nah, I'm good." I said. The guy to my right whipped out this small purple package.
"You probably gonna need this." He dropped into my lap. I picked it up and read it: "latex"
"Oh no, I'm good." I said, handing it back.
"Oh so you ain't no glove nigga!" He popped off.
"You think you gon' raw-dog my sister playboy. You aint' puttin yo lil shrimp-"
"Boys, boys, relax! Jake here's a perfect gentleman. We don't gonna have to worry about nothing tonight, ain't that right Jake?" He said while standing in front of me, sipping his soda.
