"Okay everyone, that's going to be it. Enjoy the rest of your day." Mr. Beane said. Everyone rushed out of the classroom. Alex and Don were some of the last to leave. Alex was very silent this morning, plagued by one question: Where is Jake?
"Are you good? You've been quiet all day, more quiet than usual." Don said, stopping her in the hall.
"Jake hasn't answered any of my FaceTimes nor texts, I think something is wrong." Alex said, adjusting her snapback.
"Will you chill? Look, half of our class wasn't even here today. Everyone probably got fucked up over the weekend, and needed an extra day." Don said, very calmly.
"It's been three days genius! It takes two to find a dead body! I know, I Googled it." Alex yelled.
"Okay, 'Inspector Gadget', ain't nobody dead." Don said, but Alex didn't have time for his jokes today.
"I mean you saw him, how he just ran out of homecoming, didn't even say anything to me, to us." Alex said, pondering that night. "You think Jake might've been with the football team after homecoming? I heard a few of them got busted for drunk driving." Alex whispered.
"Um Jake don't fuck with the football team, and they don't fuck with him either." Don whispered, very sarcastically. Alex punched him in the chest.
"My friend is missing and you're playing around." She yelled.
"He's my friend too, Medusa. Damn! You worry too much." Don replied, rugging his chest.
"And you're an imbecile." She said, before storming off.
"Okay, the big words are just uncalled for." Don yelled down the hall. He mocked for a second, then followed her.
Mike has been driving for hours and hours. He's circled Dunbar Street at least nine times, trying to find Jake. Mike made his way up to the roof, where Jake's transmission last went out. The roof was covered in black ash, surprisingly no police tape blocking it off. Mike examined the floor, he was able to make out some minor footprints. He played the scenario over in his head, standing close to the edge of the building, imaging the explosion. He turned around and found a broken light fixture in the alley far below. He made his way all the way down, and found the alley. He found shards of Jake's lens spread over the ground. Sadly, there were no other clues. He got back into his truck, laying his head on the steering wheel. "Where are you Jake?" He whispered to himself.
"These chicken sandwiches are so bomb!" Don said, stuffing his face. Alex kept trying to call Jake to no avail. She hadn't even touched her lunch. Don scooted her tray closer to her.
"You gotta eat something." Don said, stuffing the last of his fries. Alex pushed the tray away.
"How can you eat at a time like this?" She questioned.
"Easy, brain fuel." Don said, sipping his orange soda. Alex sent text after text, only to receive no reply. She glanced over and saw Danielle sitting on the other side of the lunchroom with her friends.
Don noticed that a menacing look on Alex's face. "Alex, no-no." Alex jumped out of her seat and stormed over to Danielle. Don followed shortly behind her, failing to slow her down.
"Danielle!" Alex yelled. Danielle and her friends all looked at Alex, loathing.
"Yeah?" Danielle asked, sounded disinterested.
"Have you seen Jake?" Alex asked, flooding her arms together.
"Have you? Last time I checked he left me at homecoming." Danielle explained.
"Maybe it was your hideous dress." Alex whispered. Don nudged her back.
"No I haven't seen him, but if you find him, tell him he owes $35 for the Uber I had to take home." Danielle said.
