19 years earlier...

An infant's shrill cry broke the silence of the night. Gentle, calloused hands wrapped a scrap of blanket around the newborn and the newly anointed father chuckled softly, "He's beautiful... "

The newly christened mother eagerly took the infant and cradled the little boy close to her chest, trying to comfort the little one as best she could. "It's alright, Little One. You're safe and sound, my Son," she murmured. Her exhausted eyes found the father's and she smiled, a weak chuckle escaping her, "I can't believe it!"

"It is a wonderful day indeed for us," he said. He had never felt the emotions that were now swirling through him, but he liked them. This was a day he would certainly never forget; however, it was about to be spoiled by unwanted guests.

Thunder abruptly shook the entire home and lightning turned night into day as the weather abruptly turned sour. Another sharp wail escaped the infant and his mother guarded him gently, her sapphire eyes filled with unease. A regal looking blade appeared in the father's hand as he opened his mouth to speak; however, he never got the chance.

Again, the entire house shook as the bedroom door was torn off the hinges and several men stormed into the room. They all carried the same kind of blade and easily subdued the father who, after struggling bravely for several minutes, realized he could not win the fight. He gazed up at the leader and pleaded, "Micheal... Please, Brother, don't harm them for a mistake I made! Let them go!"

"I hold all of your fates now. Be silent," Micheal snapped. He locked eyes with the mother and then grimaced as he noticed the infant in her arms. "You... You actually mated with this maggot and produced an heir? How you have fallen..."

"Allow me to accept all the punishment! Please, don't harm my wife and son," the father continued to plead, beginning to struggle feebly again.

The mother spoke up suddenly, "What are you planning on doing to my son? If you truly are one of Heaven's warriors, you should know who exactly I am."

A moment of tense silence settled over the room as Micheal took a slow step towards the mother. He almost sounded amused as he sneered, "You are one of the last Raynotts in existence. Your bloodline is well known among us and Demons alike as being superb Hunters of supernatural beings."

"If you end my life right now, you won't just loose me. You'll loose the entire Raynott bloodline as well," the mother stated as soon as the angel fell silent. She carefully showed her newborn son to the Arch angel and added, "I will train him when he comes of age... He will continue the Raynott name and the business we partake in. I-I have nothing else to give you but my word that I will..."

"See to it that you train him well," Micheal stated indifferently as he drew his own blade. He sent a cold smile towards the mother as he plunged the blade hilt deep into the father's chest. As the father died and slumped to the floor, the Arch angel chuckled darkly, "I'll come for him when he comes of age. I hope you meant what you said, Human Woman. If not, I will not hesitate to kill you both. Until next time." A powerful wind swept through the room as he and the other angels vanished from the bedroom.

Silent tears traced gentle pathways down the mother's face as she stared at the fallen body of her husband. The events that had just occurred made her even more unwilling to teach this child anything about the world she had forced to live in her entire life. Her lower lip began to tremble as her grief swelled to the surface. This child was now marked with a target on his back and the mother felt more worry for him than for herself. The child in her arms had fallen asleep and she tearfully promised him, "I won't let them hurt you, Alexander. I swear they will not harm you while I live."

As dawn rose over the home, she silently vowed that her son would never learn of her past life. She'd protect him quietly; the world of the supernatural would remain veiled for as long as possible. All of her weapons, books, and notes on the subject were hidden away in the attic of the home as soon as she was able to move them. Her life the revolved completely around Alex from that moment on.

Present day...

"Mrs. Raynott? The doctor will see you now."

The worried mother stepped into the room and the somber mood of the room was unmistakeable. "No... Oh no...," she murmured as the doctor hung his head slowly. It couldn't be happening! She had so much to live for yet! Her son... He'd be completely alone if she were to die and the creatures she'd hidden from him for nineteen years would easily kill him.

A slow sigh escaped the doctor. He then raised his head to look at the distraught mother, "I'm so sorry, Sylvia. The cancer has spread aggressively and there isn't much we can do since you've denied treatment for this long..."

"I understand..." Sylvia murmured. As she left the hospital several hours later, she spotted her now nineteen year old son standing by the windows of the establishment.

Alex spotted her instantly and hurried over to her. "How did it go...?" he asked quietly.

All Sylvia could do was hug her son tenderly. Her voice remained steady as she whispered, "The cancer has spread, Alex. I... I only have several more years left with you."

She felt her son's body begin to tremble against her; however, he slowly pulled away from her and struggled to smile. He kissed her forehead and murmured, "Well... Let's make the most of this time, okay? What do you want to do?"

The mother swelled with pride as she watched her son walk toward the car. All of the lessons she had taught him over the years had taken firm hold. Now, it was time for Alex to stand on his own two feet and brave the world of the unknown on his own. "I've taught you all I could, Alexander," she murmured aloud. Her eyes found the clear sky far above her and she frowned, "I know you're still watching. I know you're going to do what you promised all those years ago and I can assure you that my son will be waiting for you." Sylvia Raynott then followed her son and allowed him to help her into the car.
