James Williams, walking her home.
I looked down at Olivia, her head hung low as she kicked the sand around with her bare feet, hands still shaking.
When I had finally finished at school I ran to meet her as fast as I could. You can imagine how surprised I was to see a drunk man standing next to her.
And then when I saw how afraid she looked, it was the same look I had seen on my mother's face a hundred times.
Luckily, I resisted the instant urge to slug this disgusting man and ended up resolving the situation fairly quickly. But even when it was over Olivia still looked shook up.
So I figured I should probably walk her home.
She didn't say anything when I said I would take her there, she just quietly walked alongside me. That's how it went for some time, just walking down the sidewalk along the beach, with only the sound of the traffic and the waves of the ocean.
I finally broke our silence "did you wait long?" I asked, she shook her head no without even looking up.
I furrowed my brow, I didn't really know what to say but I felt like I needed to cheer her up. "You know you really put me in a position with that book thing," I said with a mischievous gleam in my eye. This at least made her look up, if not a little embarrassed. But she still didn't speak, so I started again. "You see I had already read it once, and Mr.Cortez has the memory of a steel trap. So it took an awful lot to convince Mr.Cortez to loan me this book." I said as I took it out of my bag.
She really was brought to life when she caught sight of "The Fall of Troy" and instantly tried to take it out of my hands. But I was too fast for her. This didn't stop her from trying her best to get it, hopping around me and reaching for it. "Whoa there, I am responsible for this book." I went on, with a smile tossing it back and forth from hand to hand miles above her head.
"Hey give it here!" she exclaimed. I opened it to the book to the page she left the note and read it aloud in a teasing tone, while skillfully avoiding each of her attempts at retrieving it. "Ah-hem, 'Hey blondie,' I assume you meant me, 'if you ever want to see your wallet again,' now that sounds like a threat. 'meet me at the beach near the station where we first met. I'll be waiting for you at post 18.' quite dramatic don't you think? 'P.s. you owe me. - sincerely-" she jumped quite high and stopped me before I could finish, she caught me off guard by grabbing for my sleeve and yanking my arm down and taking the book right out of my hand.
She swiftly took out an eraser from her bag and tried to get rid of all the evidence, rubbing away with great care. I gave a small smirk and walked along her side quietly.
she pulled the book close into her arms and her face became grave again. "thank you." Olivia said with her head looking down. "Hey, don't mention it" I replied gently. "No, I mean it. I- I was so afraid and I don't know what I would have done, if you-. I know it might not seem like a big deal, but it was, for me. So thank you." Olivia said looking up at me, she seemed so strong and yet so fragile all at once.
"Then I guess we are even then," I said smiling trying to lift her spirits. She grinned back, doing her best to match mine, her smile was sweet and her eyes bright.
It was crazy to think about how blue they were. "Actually why are they so blue? I mean there is the occasional Brazilian with brown hair and blue eyes but it's pretty unlikely to have blue eyes like that. Not to mention her perfect English." I thought to myself.
"Oh yes, here's the book" Olivia handed to me and sprung ahead walking right in front of me.
Should I let her know that I took a picture of her note? She looked just the same as did at the bus station, with each swift and confident step knowing exactly where she was going. She glanced back with a smile to make sure I was still there. Nah, I'll keep that my little secret for now.
We walked past a huge beach house, and she started to turn up to the gate. "Just a sec," she said, pulling out her keys. I stopped a few steps behind her, feeling awkward and not really sure what to do with my limbs as I waited for her to unlock the outer gate.
She turned as the door swung open and gestured for me to come also. I wasn't quite sure what to do at first, but her expression was so welcoming and friendly, it felt like the most natural thing in the world to follow her wherever she went.
