Malka had made some concoction of Turmeric to put on her wound and now her arm was bright yellow as she was changing in the morning. She sighed, it was going to stain her dress. She was picking out a dress when her gaze fell on the powder blue outfit and she remembered that night. She took it out of the closet. She had washed it and ironed it a couple of days ago but forgot to return it. As she flipped through the few outfits she had, she huffed in disappointment. She had forgotten her dress from that night in his car and there was no sign of the return, Malka had sewed that one for her too. She picked the pastel pink dress and went to change.
"Nashta karlo warna maine jaane nahi dena." Malka put the fried egg and paratha in front of her along with a cup of chai.
"Dair ho rahi hai. Warna woh kameena mujhe sunata he rahe ga." She gulped down the tea, stuffing her mouth with the paratha.
"Laila, ab to naukri bhi achi lag gayi. Maine bhi paise jama kiye hai. Mein kehti hoon ab ek choti si gadhi qiston per lein lai." Malka was packing lunch for her.
"Gali ka size dekha hai. Jahaz he na lein loon mein. Uper chhat per parking bhi easily ho jaye gi." She rolled her eyes.
"Badhi badtameez ho gayi ho."Malka smacked her with a ladle.
"Ow. Mar kyun rahi hai? Waise bhi license to hai nahi mere pass ghadi ka kya achar daloon gi. Aur tum ne kahan ghar se nikalna hai. Isliye meine paise jama karne hai. Ek chota sa ghar rent karein ge. kissi achi si jaga, yeh Safiya aunty se door." She grimaced at the thought of the nosy neighbor.
"Meine iss ghar se kahin nahi jaana. Iss ghar se sirf mera janaza nikle ga." Malka's green eyes turned furious. They had argued multiple times on this topic and every time Malka won, but Laila was determined to get her way this time.
"Kyun agar kisi aur ghar se nikla to farishton ne moun dekhne se inkaar kar dena hai." She wiggled her eyebrows at her, Malka covered her mouth with her dupatta in a shock.
"Allah, Allah! naukri ke saath zabaan bhi itni lambi ho gayi. Kahan se sikhi ho." Malka touched both her ears with her hands.
"Tumhari beti hoon. Dekho to rang to wohi charhe ga." Laila pulled on Malka's cheek making her smile. "Khana nahi banana. Kuch order karke movie dekhin ge. Mein chalti hoon." She hugged her, running out the door in the worn-out tennis shoes. She needed to go shopping at the Sunday Market soon. There was always something fancy she found even with her frugal habits.
Log kehtein hein jab zindagi badalti hai to hawaon ka rukh bhi badal jaata hai. Ya phir yeh insaan ka nazariya hota hai. Kal tak jab uske pas kuch nahi tha siwaye kuch kaghaz ke tukron ke to issi shehr ki hawaon se Laila ko nafrat thi. Per aaj na jane kyun, wohi hawayein uske chehre pe muskrahat sameit rahi tha. Uske pas thora tha magar woh thora bhi uske liye aur Malka kei liye bohat tha. Bus abhi usko uss chote se muhale ke choti soch wale logon se bohat door jaana tha. Malka ko ek bhar ghar se nikaal kar Islamabad ki galliyon ka naya roop dekhana tha. Dono ki yadein jo us sadkon aur galliyon se judhi thi woh achi nahi thi. Usko woh dard bhari yaadein mita kar ek naye sire se achi yaadein likhni thi, magar masala to Malka ko us ghar se bahar nikaalna tha aur woh sirf Allah ka koi moajza he hosakta tha.
