As her brother came towards them Oliver squeezed her hand tenderly before letting go and walking in front of Cleo blocking her from her brother's view. When Cleo's brother saw this he tried to walk around Oliver to Cleo but Oliver stepped in his path again.
"Hi I'm Oliver Cleo's best friend ever in the entire world" he said turning his head towards her and winking before turning his full attention towards Cleo's brother.
"Nice to meet you, Oliver, I'm Douglass Cleo's brother I assume she's told you a bit about me" He said through a strained smile.
"Not a single bit" Oliver said with a big smile staring straight into Douglass's eyes which were now filled with rage. Douglass turned his attention towards Cleo who clearly looked scared.
As soon as Douglass was about to speak to Cleo Oliver walked in front of Douglass shielding Cleo.
Oliver smiled " I'm sorry but if I let you talk to this kind lady behind me ill be failing my duties as a human shield so we will have to bid you a farewell sir" Oliver said bowing and walking Cleo away while Douglass looked at them with pure shock.
While Oliver and Cleo walked away Douglass leaned towards Cleo's wrist attempting to grab it but Oliver quickly slapped Douglass's wrist. While Douglass snapped his hand back astonished Oliver quickly shuffled away from where Douglass could see them. After a few minutes, Cleo started bursting out laughing which Oliver had never seen her do before. Her laugh is the best thing ive ever heard.
"No one has ever done that for me before" Cleo said smiling
"What?" Oliver asked still shocked
"Stood up to Douglass for me, not even my parents" Cleo said calming down and regaining her composure.
Oliver stood there shocked for a while before bursting out laughing making Cleo laugh again. After they calmed down Oliver became very serious.
"Cleo what did your brother do to make you avoid him" Oliver said making Cleo flinch. "I won't judge you for anything you know that" Oliver said placing his hand on her arm pleadingly.
Cleo sighed "sit down"
After they sat down together and got comfortable Oliver looked at Cleo who wouldn't look Oliver in the eye.
"Douglass is the reason I have these scars" Cleo said taking a deep breath before continuing. "No one else knows and I trust you not to tell anyone" Cleo said looking at Oliver who gave a nod of agreement. "I know you saw the scars and I know you heard the rumors and thank you for not asking questions I don't know if I'll ever be able to talk about the details but I know the scars will be here for at least another month" Cleo wanted to tell Oliver more but couldn't get another word out before she started balling.
Oliver held Cleo in his arms for the rest of lunch and then when the bell rang he just took her outside and let her cry more. He knew something happened but he never expected a family member to be the cause of it. He swore to himself that he would keep Cleo safe and happy
