7:30 AM. SEATTLE, WASHINGTON
"Jo Haseul unfortunately you will be relieved of your duties here. Due to the massive economic drop we have had to lay off some employees. Don't feel bad, you were not the only one that was laid off." Haseul's boss looked her dead in the eye saying that to her, it only led Haseul into further disbelief.
"I've done so much.. for this company." Haseul said to herself, she thought her boss wouldn't be able to hear her but she did.
"I know Haseul. You're not a burden, you're just not needed." She responded.
Haseul stared at her, not saying another word before walking off. She didn't know where to go from here. She thought to herself.. that it seems like no matter how much you do for a company your place is never secured.
Especially if that place will be given to some white man or woman.
Haseul kicked the item that was nearest to her which happened to be some small trashcan.
"Haseul! What's wrong?" Her co-worker-- Chuu-- asked her.
Haseul had taken a liking to Jiwoo, or as most people called her 'Chuu' Jiwoo was the only other Asian worker, and that made them close to each other as they both experienced the same struggles.
"Just got laid off." She responded, burying her head in her hands.
"That's terrible!" Chuu retaliated, her voice loud and angry.
"Whatever, don't go complaining because you'll probably be next." Haseul mumbled, her voice full of bitterness.
"I'm totally going to-" Chuu began before another co-worker told her that the boss would like to see her in her office.
Haseul gave her a 'I told you so' glare before turning her gaze towards the trash can. She shouldn't have let her anger get a hold of her like that.
A couple minutes passed, and Jiwoo came back and sat down where she was sitting. Haseul examined her expression. She had no true expression but when she opened her mouth her eyes rolled back into her skull.
"I got laid off too."
-------
Haseul headed back home, she used her key to unlock the door before setting them onto the counter. She turned on the TV and let it play as background noise as her mind was overran with thoughts. She wasn't surprised that she was laid off, she just didn't want to think about what would happen.
Her eyes would occasionally glance at the TV, they were talking about nothing but the latest economic drop. She guessed that it was better for them to be talking about boring things rather than something serious.
She took out her laptop, and began to scan websites for job openings which was seemingly impossible. No one was hiring.
Haseul's eyes glanced up at the door when she heard some knocks on the door. She stood up to answer the door, visibly annoyed.
"Hi Haseul!" Chuu said, standing at the door her voice bubbly and happy, almost as if she didn't just get laid off.
"Hey." Haseul said, before sitting back on the couch.
"Whatcha' doing?" She asked, plopping on the couch next to the raven-headed girl.
"Looking for jobs." Haseul responded not looking up at Chuu to see her scrunching her nose in disgust.
"You're not even going to try to enjoy the unemployed life?" Chuu said.
"What's their to enjoy? I've got bills to pay, student loans to pay off." Haseul responded her gaze still on her laptop occasionally looking up at the TV, but never directly at Jiwoo.
Jiwoo rolled her eyes, before looking at the TV.
THIS IS A NATIONAL EMERGENCY! THIS IS A NATIONAL EMERGENCY!
The words scrolled on the TV, in bright red. Haseul's eyes focused on the TV in concern.
STAY HOME. WE HAVE DISCOVERED SUPERNATURAL CREATURES THAT FEED ON HUMAN FLESH. PLEASE STAY HOME. STAY ALERT. AND CARRY WEAPONS.
"This some type of joke?" Haseul said, deep down she was a bit afraid.
"I don't think so... Haseul.. look outside..." Chuu said.
Haseul's turned her face towards the windows that were covered in blinds. She felt her heart drop as she saw a walking corpse feeding off of the woman that lived across from her.
Chuu immediately sprung up to action, "We have to save her."
Haseul couldn't believe what she just had heard, was Jiwoo deranged? Haseul wasn't stepping foot outside of this house.
"NO? It's too late Jiwoo, she's gone."
"You're not even going to try to help her!" Jiwoo said, before Haseul could even answer Jiwoo ran out the door and into the action to try to seperate the corpse's teeth from the woman's skin. Once Jiwoo had gotten a better look at the creature she had immedietly regretted her choice, but she was too far in now.
She kicked the creature onto the ground and it grabbed onto her leg. biting her making her fall onto the ground.
"Augh!" She said, "Run!" She yelled at the woman who's life she had saved. The girl insisted on staying to save Jiwoo, but Jiwoo thought she could handle this herself.
"Fuck, I said RUN!" She commanded.
Haseul was frozen with horror, Jiwoo was going to die right in front of her. Jiwoo was going to die a hero though. Haseul couldn't say the same for herself.
Soon she began to see more walking corpses, beginning to over take her neighborhood and raid people's homes.
She knew she had to get out of there and fast, she took every food supply and her gun out for good measure. She stuffed all of her supplies in a bag. She could hear the undead banging on her door desperate to get in. She hopped out the back window, her gun in hand and began to run to safety.
She found a neighborhood that had appeared to have already been attacked. There was still a dog, she nervously crept up on the home. Only to be met with a little girl pointing a gun at her.
"Put it down." The girl said once her gaze fixated on Haseul's gun.
Haseul dropped it, and kicked it away her hands up.
"Please don't shoot.." Haseul said.
"What do you want." The girl with blondish hair said, she was definitely asian and her voice was quite husky for someone her age.
"I just wanted to check for survivors." Haseul stuttered, her voice full of fear.
"Me and Bummer are the only ones left in the neighborhood. I already checked." The girl said, lowering her gun. Haseul felt relieved she appeared to be trusted. "What's in the bag."
"Survivor stuff." Haseul responded.
The girl scoffed, before turning her back on Haseul.
"How dramatic. You think this is the walking dead or something?"
