4:00 PM. SEATTLE, WASHINGTON
Haseul thought the girl was pretty tough, she couldn't help but ask her a few questions that she was sure she wouldn't get answers to. It didn't help to stay quiet.
"What's your name?" She said to the blonde.
"I'm not telling you." She answered. Haseul thought that was predictable. Although, she couldn't wrap her head around why the living were still afraid of the living. There were more serious things to worry about at the moment... Like the undead walking around and eating people's faces off.
"How old are you, at least? You seem strong.." Haseul asked, her mind was still overran with thoughts of Jiwoo. She thought that no matter what she did.. Jiwoo would still have died and she felt defeat when she continued to think about how she let her die, it was her fault no matter how much she tried to convince herself it wasn't.
"I'm 13." She said, her back still turned on Haseul.
Haseul nodded to herself, "How much time do you think we have."
"I don't know, you're the adult here." She responded as she continued to scan every cabinet and drawer.
"It's 4. I don't know when the sun will set, but we need to hurry and find somewhere safe." Haseul insisted, she wasn't entirely sure what to do with this kid. She couldn't just leave her alone she was only 13.
She acted tough but Haseul could see right through her act. She was scared to death and her hands were shaking every time she picked up something.
Haseul shook her head, and walked closer to the girl kneeling down to make eye contact with her.
"Listen, me, you, and that dog outside. We're a team. We have to stick together but before any of that. You have to trust me."
The girl stayed quiet, but flinched once Haseul took her hand. Haseul noticed that it was shaking with fear or nervousness, or maybe both. The girl looked up at Haseul her eyes locked on hers.
"I'm Yeojin." She said, and Haseul smiled softly before standing up with Yeojin's hand still in hers.
"Okay, Yeojin. Where are your parents?" Haseul asked, her eyes scanning the house's main entrance and living room. She caught a glimpse of the broken neighborhood from outside the main window. It was heart-breaking. Haseul still hadn't realized what was actually happening and she didn't have enough energy to even find out How this was going on.
"My parents.. they left to to Olympia last week. They said they were on a business trip."
Haseul sighed to herself, "You were here by yourself?"
Yeojin didn't respond, she just shook her head before walking out to the front door. Haseul followed her and reality hit her when she almost stepped on a dead body with the insides torn out, seemingly by force.
"Augh!" Haseul yelled on accident, before backing away.
Yeojin turned to face Haseul. "I was with her."
Haseul looked at Yeojin, she couldn't speak. The situation was too harsh and morbid to be real, she knew this wasn't a dream but she wanted it to be so bad.
Yeojin began to speak in her monotone voice, "I was with her, she gave me this gun."
Yeojin lifted her gun to show it to Haseul, and Haseul's eyes widened as she saw a corpse sneaking behind Yeojin.
"MOVE!" She said, pushing Yeojin out of the way and into the house.
Yeojin rubbed her arm where it was pushed, she was going to mention that it hurted, but she was just thankful that the woman saved her life. "Why can't I get your name?" Yeojin asked.
"My name is Haseul. I'm going to get my gun." Haseul said, before retreating to the backyard only to be met with dozen of walking corpses scraping the backdoor.
"Oh shit.." She said to herself.
"Don't curse." Yeojin said, but once she noticed the herd of corpses outside she took her comment back.
"Holy shit, let's go out front!" Yeojin yelled, turning around whilst tugging on Haseul's hand but she was met with the undead there too. "Haseul we're trapped!" She yelled, holding onto Haseul's leg.
Haseul didn't know how to get out of this situation. She looked at Yeojin who was borderline near tears. She thought it was quite inconvenient that her tough act wasn't real, but she was set on protecting this little girl.
"Upstairs." Haseul said, she ran up the stairs with Yeojin and looked out the window into the backyard.
"No... No... No..." Yeojin said, she was looking out the window as well. "Haseul! They're going to get Bummer! We've got to save him!"
Haseul took a deep breath, and her gaze looked outside. She was sure that the corpse's only fed on human flesh.. at least that's what the announcement said.
Haseul took Yeojin's gun, and began to head down stairs anyway. She was nervous to shoot the corpse's but they sure as hell weren't nervous to take a bite off of her face.
1 shot, in the undead's head. she had 4 more to go.
2 shot. She should start moving. The undead weren't faster than her or smarter. She tried to unleash the dog's collar but she was still moving too slow.
"Come on, Bummer.." She said, occasionally looking up to make sure she wasn't going to get bit.
3 shot. That one got a little too close. She got Bummer's leash unhooked, and tried to lead him into the house but he was acting stubborn.
"Bummer! Come on!" She said, her voice getting louder by the second. Haseul's gun was getting hot, and she didn't want to become too trigger happy. She wasn't sure how many bullets were in the gun.
Bummer eventually began to walk, Haseul was relieved until she noticed one of the undead's teeth sunken into Bummer's back. Her eyes widened. 4 shot.
"Bummer..." She spoke, her voice full of defeat. This would have been the second life that had been lost and it'd be all her fault.
Yeojin ran down the stairs, not thinking properly and ran to Bummer's body kicking the corpse's body off of his. Yeojin felt tears run down her face.
"Bummer I'm so sorry.." She said once she heard his wails.
5 shot. Last one down.
Haseul walked next to Yeojin and Bummer, her eyes full of sorrow. She couldn't help but feel responsible. If she hadn't been so slow. She promised Yeojin that they'd all be a team no matter what.
Within the first few minutes of meeting Yeojin she had already broken her promise.
"Come on, let's get out of here. More of those monsters will be here soon." Yeojin said, lifting her head up from Bummer's body slowly.
"Where will we go." Haseul asked her.
Yeojin didn't answer until a couple minutes passed and they were already walking down the street, "We're going to Olympia."
