A/N: Y/D/N=Your dog's name. If you don't have a dog, then just make up a name.
You and Ariana were at a coffee shop, just relaxing after a stressful week of work. You were sipping coffee from a steaming hot mug when suddenly, you phone rang. It was your mom. You lived in LA with Ariana, but your parents lived in Canada, your home country, so it was common for them to call to check up on you.
"Hello?" You said when you picked up the phone.
"Hi Y/N," The familiar sound of your mother's voice was slightly choked. Something bad must've have happened. You braced yourself for the bad news.
"Mom? What happened?"
"It's Y/D/N, sh-she/h-he passed away this morning." She replied, her voice trembling.
Before you had time to respond, she hung up, sobbing. You've had Y/D/N ever since you were a little girl, so it wasn't surprising that her/his time has come to leave the Earth. Nevertheless, you were still shaken and sad, and you felt tears welling up in your eyes.
"Honey what's wrong?" Ariana stood up from her chair and hugged you from behind, putting her head on your shoulder. She wiped away your tears as more flowed down your face and handed you a tissue.
"My dog. She/he died." You blew your nose into the tissue and covered your face with your hands.
"But at least she/he lived the best life a dog could ask for. She's/he's lucky to have an owner like you. I'm lucky to have a girlfriend like you." She pulled your hands away from your face and looked you in the eyes. Her eyes were watering too. She loved your dog as much as you did.
"I should have brought her/him to LA with me." You hiccuped and put your head down on the table. People were starting to stare, but you didn't care. The news was too overwhelming for you to process.
"It wouldn't have made a difference. Plus, Toulouse might've bullied her/him. There was nothing more you can do. It was time for her/him to move on. You'll reunite one day." Ariana stroked your arm comfortingly and leaned in close to you. She wrapped her arm around you once again, the scent of her perfume bringing you back down to earth. "And, it wouldn't be fair for all the other doggies on earth if Y/D/N got to live with the best owner forever. They want a chance too."
You smiled through your tears and looked up at Ariana.
"Then let's get another dog. But do you think Y/D/N would've wanted me to adopt a new dog? I don't want to replace her/him." You sniffed, calming down a little.
"Of course she/he would. You're not replacing her/him. She'll/he'll always have a special place in our hearts. Y/D/N would've wanted you to be happy and move on with your life." Ariana smiled sadly. A strand of hair fell in front of your eye and she tucked it behind your ear, her touch making you shiver slightly. "C'mon, there's an animal shelter a few minutes away from here." She helped you stand up and picked up your coffee.
As you and Ariana got into her car, you couldn't help feeling excited. Maybe Y/D/N will live on in this new dog you're about to get.
