"YOU'RE AN arsehole."
"I didn't know, I didn't- we weren't on good terms. I didn't think she'd be someone I could turn to."
"But she is now?"
"No!" He spat the word as if she had just stung him, jumping out of the car and walking over to her. "I didn't lie, Grace."
She didn't turn to him, eyes still staring at the orange dust beside the road.
"Grace."
Her head jerked to face his so quickly he nearly jumped, her eyes narrowed ever so slightly as if she was looking for something microscopic in his.
"You can't leave me." she whispered
He shook his head gently
"I would never."
She nodded her head to the side, gesturing for him to move, before opening the car door and throwing her bag in, stepping in afterwards.
Walter closed her door after her, and then moved to get into his side with a bounce in his step.
He waited until the car had started moving to break the silence, words spoken confidently after an exhale.
"You know if we're being honest I should probably tell you that there is someone who technically makes me not alone."
He registered the clench of her jaw, the flinch of her eyes, and the ever so slight tilt of her chin before she spoke, hushed.
"Who."
Walter put his hand on hers, and Grace reluctantly turned her head to face his.
"You."
