Little Black Swans

Charlie Swan wasn't stupid.

He was well aware of the wolves and vampires that littered his small town of Forks, Washington.

How?

Well let me give you a quick history check on "the Swans" which were once called "Black".

Black Swans. An inside joke the Swans parents Lyra and Marius would joke to their son Charles "Charlie" Pollux Swan who watched from the stairs as his mother cleaned up with flicks of a wand that lit of colorful lights.

Magic. He marveled.

Actual real Magic!

He was excited at the prospect of having magic, but by the age 11 he was disappointed to be told he didn't have enough magic to cast spells with a wand.

He could still make magical potions and use magical items, but Charlie was still deeply disappointed.

Lyra and Marius weren't surprised. Even they knew their family was inbred to the point of constant squibs.

Marius was a squib while Lyra was Marius's third cousin so the chances of Charlie being magical was slim to none.

It crushed their hearts to see the hurt and disappointment in their son's eyes when he realized he couldn't cast spells.

Eventually Charlie moved on and was interested in helping people like his mom who had worked as an Auror for the Magical Congress of the United States of America or MACUSA for short.

And so he later became a police officer in honor of his mother, Lyra.

Charlie knew his parents had him late in life, they were already in their late forties and fifties when they had him so he was quite spoiled with love.

Charlie loves Forks, Washington because it reminded him of all the good times he had with his parents growing up.

From camping in the woods to flying on broomsticks and bonding over potion making.

It crushed his heart to learn that his parents had gotten dragon pox which was lethal to the elderly, Charlie who had gotten it when he was young was in the safe zone.

However, his parents were unfortunately so weakened to the point recovery wasn't enough to save them.

Charlie had just gotten married to his high school sweetheart Renée Dwyer and then had a baby girl together not long after getting married.

Charlie was torn. He wanted to be there for his family but he also wanted to be with his parents last dying moments.

Eventually Charlie and Renée argued about his indecisiveness that they fought constantly.

Charlie, who grew up with love and a high respect for loyalty, refused Renée who wanted to move away from Forks.

Forks was his home, his life, part of his identity.

There was no way he was moving.

Charlie knew this was Renée's breaking point when she finally got fed up and left taking their daughter with her and later sending him divorce papers.

Charlie was left behind to bury his dead parents who died together with no one there to hold his hand and tell him everything would be okay.

Charlie felt a part of him die with his parents, he stopped using magic all together. Without the joy of sharing part of his heritage what was the point?

He thought back to the day he was 10 and he finally asked why they were called "Black Swans". He could remember the way his parents' eyes crinkled in amusement as their mouths tugged into smiles.

"A black swan is an unpredictable event that is beyond what is normally expected of a situation and has potentially severe consequences. Black swan events are characterized by their extreme rarity, their severe impact, and the practice of explaining widespread failure to predict them as simple folly in hindsight." His mother had lectured him.

His father chuckled before taking over.

"As a Black Swan we broke away from the normal madness associated with the Blacks and held our heads high as we made our own destinies without fear. Remember we are different for a reason, we do not follow the mainstream. Be true to yourself."

His parents had explained to him growing up. At first he didn't understand but as he grew he started to understand.

His family were black sheeps of the family ironically.

He remembered when he was fifteen and asked about why they didn't have any family that likes them.

His mom had smiled sadly, "The Blacks hate squibs more than anything. They deem them as failures—", she cut off by an angered Charlie.

"Dad is not a failure!", he fumed.

"I know he isn't but you have to understand the Blacks prided themselves over Family Magics. And having and being a squib was the biggest insult to the family. Y-Your—", she stumbled over her words.

"—Your father was lucky they sent your father to an orphanage rather than outright killing him like most families", she explained to him.

His father sat next to him and patted his head, "Family is forever, and this is Forever."

Charlie smiles when his parents pull him into an embrace. Charlie embraces the warmth, he rather have his parents than unloving magical ones. He was lucky to have loving and understanding parents.

After his parents death and his divorce he stopped associating with magic but as years passed his Black Family Magic in his blood urged him to use magic in any way, but he kept denying it.

When his 17 year old daughter was sent back to him, he hoped that the Black blood in her veins would encourage her to bond with him. Loyalty was a part of Blacks Family Magic.

He was disappointed to find out that his daughter's magic was neutralized and never manifested making her have less magic than a squib. She was practically a muggle.

He had a feeling Renée managed to make her awful opinions about abnormalities to the point where she managed to influence his daughter who subconsciously suppressed and ripped her magic apart in fear of her mother hating her..

When he met Valerie Hale, something in his blood screamed at him that she was familiar and should be trusted, at first he didn't quite understand but he remembered the Black Family Magics.

She was Family.

'Family' he marveled in childish wonder.

Valerie turned to him and cheekily smiled back at him. Charlie let a soft true smile grace his face.

'Family. Family is Forever and this is Forever', he remembered.
