CHAPTER 2
"doctor! please someone! he's awake, he's opening his eyes! minho?? can you hear me?!"
as if he was awakening from a lifelong dream, minho struggled to open his eyes which felt like they had been shut for days. little did he know he would wish he never woke up in the first place.
his head hurt, his body hurt, his arms and legs felt numb. his heart felt like it had been pricked with thorns, although he didn't know why and was too confused to even recognise the pain or the person in the room with him. minho could hear someone calling out to him, calling his name but the voice was clouded and indistinct in his head.
"where am i?"
he managed to vocalise the bare minimum of the questions that raced through his mind and the incessant ringing in his ears did not help.
"you're in the hospital min.." replied his best friend, chan. to his complete surprise, minho found the older standing beside his hospital bed, however he showed no reaction.
"you got into a car accident.. remember?"
minho winced in agony, "agh my head.."
chan immediately reacted to this response, placing his hand on minho's shoulder as support, "just wait min, the doctor's coming, don't get up."
ignoring chan's instructions, minho tried his best to sit up. he wanted to do anything than stay in that lying position where he felt vulnerable and weak.
the doctor entered the room with a clipboard in his hand and walked over to the patient.
"mr lee, i see you've woken up. you were involved in a car accident, do you remember that?"
minho hesitated before nodding his head slowly, he did remember but the details were blurry.
"ah okay, i'm sure your friend here will fill you in with the details. but for now, you should know you've suffered a severe blow to the head, a broken arm and some minor bruising, which means we will have to keep you under observation for the next few days."
minho nodded in understanding, but did nothing more.
"we're just glad he's awake now, right min?"
silence and tension filled the air between the three.
"thank you doc." chan gave an insincere smile to the doctor, who returned one before exiting the room.
"you okay minho?"
"where's sungie?" minho asked, looking around the room, only to be met with silence from the other.
"where's jisung?" he echoed, this time louder to make sure the older heard the second time.
his eyes fixated on chan, who wore a glum and guilty expression on his pale and sullen face, only to receive no answer from him once again.
"chan. where is jisung."
minho furrowed his brows at the older as he grew frustrated. he demanded an answer. a gesture. a response. anything but silence because silence never meant anything good in circumstances like theirs.
"minho.."
chan softly spoke, like if he spoke any louder, it would break the fragile and porcelain shell that minho found himself stuck in.
"he's gone."
chan looked to the ground as minho's face softened and the creases on his forehead relaxed. he looked confused, he looked so distraught and lost and chan hated seeing the younger like that, and he hated being the bearer of bad news.
"what? i don't understand."
"min, do you remember what happened?"
minho looked towards the end of his bed as if it would help him regain his memory of that night.
"we.. we were in the car.. and then there was this light.."
he paused shortly before continuing.
"and then... it just turned black."
he paused again.
"wait.. we were in the car.. to get you.."
minho, hit with a wave of realisation, looked back up at the older. chan was still looking down at the ground, his fingers fiddling together as he grew more anxious. he couldn't face the younger, knowing he was being reckless that night by drinking too much yet again.
"it's your fault."
minho suddenly deadpanned. his confused expression disappeared like a cloud of breath in cold air, vanished and gone just like that.
"you don't mean that." few words managed to escape chan's mouth as his throat ran dry and he was left speechless at the unexpected accusation.
"get out chan."
minho demanded coldly, his vacant stare piercing right through chan's hopeful eyes like they were transparent. chan desperately searched for some sort of remorse in minho's irises, finding nothing but emptiness.
it scared him, he had never seen his best friend like this and he was the one to make him like this.
"leave me alone."
"minho i—"
"i said leave me alone!"
minho screamed and screamed, telling chan to get out and go away, not planning to stop until chan left the room. his arms flailed lifelessly in the air and his face wore such terror and anger that chan could do nothing but step back and watch his best friend become unhinged.
two nurses and a doctor entered the room, rushing to hold minho back from potentially killing chan, even though the monitoring wires kept minho from getting out of bed.
"hold him down! mr lee please calm down. sir i'm afraid you're going to have to leave."
"i'm sorry min!" chan shouted out before nodding to the doctor and backing out to the door.
"it's all your fucking fault!" was the only thing minho wailed out.
chan quickly made his way out of the hospital room, minho's acidic screams burning in his ears before he closed the door shut.
he leaned against the wall opposite the door, sliding down to the floor as he brought his knees up, his heart beating out of his chest. he gripped his brown locks and rested his forehead on his knees as his tears escaped his sorrowful eyes. he sent minho into a fit of rage and chan was the one to blame.
"what have i done."
