Mathias would usually describe his life as averagely good. He had a home, his brother had a job, and he had enough coins to feed himself at least every second day.
Coming home, he bursted into the kitchen to go greet his brother, Berwald.
He found him by the stove, and an alright smelling aroma was filling the room, coming from what he thought looked like stew. "Brother! You will never believe what happened to me today!" He exclaimed, thinking back to the boy who tried to pickpocket him earlier today.
A grunt was heard from Berwald, and Mathias continued, "A skinny looking boy tried to steal from me. Luckily, a woman called wolf. But even if she hadn't, I'm sure I'd be able to catch him if he ran." He grinned.
Berwald let out get another grunt, and for once slightly turned his expressionless face to look at Mathias. "And why's that?" He asked.
Berwald was an intimidating tall man, but after years of living with him, Mathias was far used to it. "He seemed so weak! I grabbed his arm so he wouldn't run, and when he tried fighting back, I barely even felt him kicking!" He said, still with a grin on his face.
Of course, he had felt it. The weak looking skinny boy had surprisingly been pretty strong, when he tried to get away, and had even left a bruise on Mathias' leg
For a moment, Mathias thought he saw a glimpse of temper in Berwald's expressionless eyes, but it was gone so quickly he wasn't sure if it was his imagination or not.
"Could you not have just given him a few coins?" Berwald said, to Mathias' surprise, facing back at the stew. "If he was that weak, I'm sure he could have needed it."
Mathias hadn't thought of that. But now that he did, the boy had actually seemed quite skinny. Of course, most are these days, as it's not easy to get a job. But he had seemed.. unusually skinny. More than the usual he'd seen.
When Mathias didn't say anything further, Berwald came with a suggestion.
"You could visit him before they execute him." He grunted. "Ask him why he stole."
"That.. actually seems like a good idea!" Mathias exclaimed, and smiled. "I'll do that!" He said, and then he left the kitchen, and went outside to grab some firewood
