Chapter One

Way to go, Phoenix, getting yourself in trouble again.

I had tried to run, really I did, but these guys had to be about twice my size and had grabbed me in seconds. I could only grunt as I was thrown up against the brick wall, wincing, not because I was in pain, but rather because I knew my laptop was in my backpack, which was currently on my back.

Which had just been crushed between me and this wall.

I don’t see why trouble insisted on always finding me. I hadn’t even been doing anything this time except trying to get out of the pouring rain when I started down the alley. Stupid me didn’t realize until it was too late that I had just walked smack dab into a drug deal.

Mom would be proud.

I had tried to back track as soon as I saw I was being stared at open mouthed, while two guys were passing back a baggy full of white powder. It didn’t take genius to realize what I had done then, but before I could even take four steps back they had grabbed me.

“Maybe we should do a little something to make sure this kid keeps his mouth shut.” One of the guys seethed out, and I couldn’t help but pull away from him as he had the craziest eyes I have ever seen.

“Keep my mouth shut?” I echoed innocently. “I didn’t see anything. Nope. Not a thing. Too dark to see anything but the streetlight at the end of the alle--”

I got cut off by a punch that made me grunt.

“Damn you talk a lot.” The same guy said with a scowl. “Let’s cut his tongue out, Jimmy. Then the kid really can’t say nothing.”

“Say anything.” I corrected him, which was so stupid of me to do as he growled and displayed a knife.

“You want to keep talking pu--!”

“I think you need to let my friend go.”

Friend? I didn’t have any friends.

The men holding me looked equally confused, turning to peer at the end of the alley where some guy taller than the one’s holding me stood. I couldn’t really make anything out but his outline, not with the way the street lights were currently hitting him.

I wondered what the catch was to having this stranger save me.

“Your friend?” The other guy finally spoke, and I was slightly impressed to see that grills were a real thing. Probably would’ve even asked about them had I not remembered they were probably seconds away from distorting my amazing figure. “Your friend got himself into some trouble, so why don’t you just beat it?”

I might’ve imagined it, but I could practically hear the sigh from where I was. The man started walking towards us, making us all tense up, but the men holding me didn’t back off. They seemed to think that they could handle this guy, which I was beginning to grow doubtful of, and stood their ground as he walked closer.

Finally he stopped, and reached into his pocket, making us all jump as if we thought he were reaching for a gun, but instead he pulled out some money.

“I’ve got five on me, that’s it.” He said, and handed it over to the guy’s holding me. The guys themselves exchanged skeptical glances, before the one with the grills reached out and yanked it from the man’s hand. They both glanced over it, then blinked in surprise and quickly stared back up at him.
